Today we made our way to the Bay of Islands, with our busdriver Fly. An early start at 6.55am, we crossed the harbour bridge, stopped off at sheep world and dropped people off in Whagadai, before reaching our destination mid afternoon. Our hostel beside Base (can't remember the name) seemed nice, decent room and also very talkative staff. We went and done some groceries and had a walk around the bay.
The next day we jumped on our Cape Reinga tour, which we were taken in by a 4 wheel drive bus; kinda looked like a bus and a truck mushed together. We were taken to a forest where the walkway had been built for the queens visit, which she only stepped on for two minutes. We went to Taputaputa bay, the most northern campground in NZ and from here we saw a pod of orca!! Amazing!! We went to Cape Reinga and the lighthouse and saw where the two seas met. We dropped one of the passengers off here and he was going o walk from the tip of Nz to the bottom of the South Island in aid of winded warriors. We went to Te paki sand dunes for sand boarding. We saw Matapia island, which has big hole in rock. We drove along 90 mile beach with is in fact just 63 miles. We sat at the front and the bus driver was really lovely. Pointing out wildlife such as the kingfishers to us. Really enjoyed the day.
We had himmed and haa'ed about going on the Rock, an overnight boat packed with activities. We had gotten ourselves a great price and decided to put it on the credit card. All we had to do was get our money back from the hostel for the nights accommodation. That was easier said than done. But we got there. So we headed back down to the shop to make payment and organise when to come back for the boat, and it had been cancelled. We were gutted :( So with a tail between legs, we checked back into hostel and accepted it wasn't meant to be. We had a DVD night instead.
The next day was a top up our tab beach day and also our four year anniversary. We bought some big juicy steaks and Kenny cooked them up on the BBQ along with some baked potato and corn on the cob. We found a free bottle of wine on the free food shelf and a red has never tasted so good. Lovely wee evening.
On our last day, we attempted the walk to Whangarei falls but we never made it that far. Before returning to Auckland to get ourselves ready for our flight to Australia.
