Kim's Travels
This morning we were up at 0530 to start our exciting trip to Fraser Island (biggest sand island in the world). We booked ourselves into a trip where you are put in groups of 8, given a 4x4, camping equipment and allowed to do whatever (well...) you want for 3 days! We had to hand over another whole load of money (gr) and watch a couple of 'safety' videos, mainly about wild dingoes who have the potential to kill (a few years ago a nine year old boy was killed by one) so we were told all the usual stuff about protecting yourself and also some stuff about he environment blah blah blah... It also gave us info on the whole camping thing; DIGGING HOLES BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF 'AMENITIES'. Yes, you can imagine my delight. No, I'm not joking we had to squat in a self dug hole to go to the loo... Hmph. Anyway we went to do our food shopping with our new group (me, Tom, Alex, Naomi, Will, Catherine and two random Swiss dudes Alain and Gautier). After, we drove to the garage and were given all our camping stuff, told how to put up the tents etc... which is where I began to get seriously concerned - It really was 'back to basics'! So we caught the ferry over to the Island on our 4x4 and once we got there started our adventure. At first we were all a bit shocked by the bumpy ride; we were all over the place (!) but soon came to our first stop, Lake Mackenzie which was STUNNING. Oh my God I cant tell you how beautiful it was; crystal clear water, white sands, and sun... HEAVEN! While we were there we got to know the other group (Dan, Paul, Gavine, Dave & Mark) 2 cockney lads and 3 equally amusing scots. We drove to several other beauty spots, all seriously scared for our lives on the way! (The driving...) Before setting up camp at Eurong Beach. I couldn't believe I was going to be sleeping on the ground in a tiny little tent. We camped right by the beach which was beautiful. There was just nothing there apart from us and our tents. We soon cracked on with dinner (in the dark; interesting) which was a BBQ and salad. Then we got started on the GOON! We toasted marshmellows and got to know the other groups. It was a very good, very amusing, very drunken night!
