Wow! The Blue Mountains are simply stunning. The haze caused by the eucalyptus oil from the Eucalptus trees causes them to look blue - hence the name.
We stayed in a town called Katoomba on our first night (1100m above sea level) and it was very very cold! We were lucky though - we had missed the sleet and snow of the previous week and we actually had beautiful sunny weather during the day. We spent time touring the area, seeing the famous Three Sisters rock formation, various waterfalls and the Grand Canyon (no not THE Grand Canyon - the Aussie version). We went down to the valley floor on the Worlds steepest railway - which was almost vertical and actually quite scary if you were in the front seats (which we were of course!) After a wander around the rainforest we used the cable car to go back into the mountains and Kim managed to set off a wailing alarm going out the wrong door. We also managed to get some cool photos sitting on deserted clifftops, away from the tourist trail.
We spent our second night on the top of Mt. Yorke, a deserted area 1000m above sea level with stunning views whilst we ate our pasta. We relished the peace and tranquility until we woke up surrounded by people laying out ropes and assault courses with 100 schoolkids due any minute! We quickly escaped and headed south, stopping at a scenic campsite at Jervis Bay. We only realised later that we were camped next to a school kayaking trip of teenagers...oh God help us....
