Today we headed towards the Soussvlei dunes - the huge red sand dunes that Namibia is famous for. On the way we crossed the Tropic of Capricorn - which was almost as exciting as if we had crossed the equator... well almost...
Camping over night we left camp at 5.30am to reach dune 45 before sunrise. We climbed the dune in half darkness and then sat down at the top to watch the sun come up (well Mark did, Kim gave up 2/3 of the way up and stopped to enjoy the view!) The sunrise over the dunes was stunning and well worth the effort.
Mid morning we headed out to meet a local guide who took us for a 3 hour desert walk - showing us desert creatures like the trapdoor spider, lizards and beetles. We also got to run down a very high and very steep dune...no injuries to report thankfully!
The rest of the day was uneventful apart from 2 flat tyres within an hour of each other that had us sitting on the side of the road in the desert while the lads battled with an ancient jack to fit tyres that clearing were far too large for the truck!
