Maun was the starting point for our expedition into the Okavango Delta, one of the last true wilderness areas in Africa. We set off by Mokoro canoe, poled expertly by Irene, a local woman, through narrow waterways flanked by reeds. After 2.5 hours we reached our camp on the banks of the delta - no toilet, no shower, no water - nothing!! Eek!
Our three days spent in the delta was fantastic - we went out on bush walks tracking game and saw elephants, giraffe, jackal, ostrich, impala and baboons up close and personal. We even saw a recent leopard kill - with just fresh blood and fatty bits of intestine left to show for it. So fresh apparently that the guide thought we had disturbed its feast and it was likely to be watching us from close by!
Coping with a bush toilet (hole in the ground) was ok though Kim was convinced a warthog was going to rush out of the bushes and charge her while squatting over the hole at night! (There was a lot of rustling in the bushes.... and were those eyes glowing.....????)
Other highlights of the trip were a sunset mokoro cruise, the receipt of a waterlily necklace from Irene (rather wet and slimy but gratefullly received nonetheless), a fabulous 45 minute flight over the delta spotting game in a 5 seater Cessna aircratft and eating warthog for dinner - yum!
