And so to namibia!!
we're now part of an overland tour - a truck full of people from around the world (who are all lovely which is lucky!) and we are heading from cape town, through namibia, zambia, botswana and back to south africa.
Been on the road 5 days and we've come to our first town since cape town (nothing except the odd garage, campsite or farm for five days!)
in cape town, before we left we did a township tour, where you are taken to the area of the city that was set aside for the "blacks" during the time of apartheid. Here the poorest of all south africa lived and its always the furthest racial settlement from the centre of town. We went to lagna, a township around 20mins drive out of cape town. it has its own market, shops, community centre (which prince charles had visited!) and farms. we met with different families, heard their stories, played with the most incredible children ive ever met, so happy and playful in their rags of clothes. We tried the local beer, a decendant of irish potatoe starch type drink, was disgusting! We visited the witch doctor, there are no medical facilities unless you can pay or have certain diseases so the witch doctor treats the same as a gp would back home. His house was full of dead animals, bones, candles, herbs and furs. was really interesting but stinky - he was needing a spring clean! i got talking to an old gentleman sitting at the entrance who was obviously waiting his turn to be treated, he blethered away to me in afrikaan. i had no idea what he was saying but we had a great conversation!
That trip showed us how happy and incredibly at peace these people are with their world, there is a huge sense of community. Every child is every adults responsibility, the men provide either money or meat and the women clean and laugh all day! it was lovely. Whilst i was there, i was playing with a little boy (kezz had about 20 clinging to him!) and my camera dropped out my pocket. Another little boy ran over shouting, grabbed it and ran after me. He was so worried that i would loose it. He was only about 5 and probably owned only what he wore yet he had no intention of running away with the camera, just lovely people!
Since capetown we have been driving north - the truck is very comfy, space to lye down with mattresses, tables to play cards, books, ipod speaker system, big windows to watch the world go by, lockers for your bags and the biggest fridge ever for all the beers!! So the drives have been wonderful, everyone singing, laughing and talking about the scenery.
The campsites have mostly been a sand field with a fence, toilets and a bar -all you need! Lots of interesting animals - jackels, ground squirrels, scorpions and the rare kezz ape (he he!). one of the sites had an owner who is of scottish decent and wore his kilt most nights, the campsite was called "the highlands" and he had a photo of his father in full highland regala playing the pipes - how random!!
we've been wine tasting, climbed sand dunes (the size of a munro!) to watch sunrise. we've camped in the desert with nothing on the horizon in any direction. its been incredible!
we're now in swakopmund - a small tourist town on the coast. Lots of adventure activies so kezzy is off quad biking today and fishing tommorow. im chilling with the girls today and going sandboarding tommorow. Nice to be back in civilisation for a day or two! We have our clothes in for laundry just now - so excited about seeing their real colours again as everything gets covered in the sand and dust!
Anyway, my times running out so you'll need to wait for more stories. We're having a ball but wish we could pop home to see you all!!
Happy birthday dad, you old popalot! hope you have a wonderful day!
