Run, St. Noa's, run!
And so I'm coming to you after an epic two weeks filled with family visits, cake, and more importantly 2 SPORTS DAYS?!
The sports days are leading u to a national level event which will be held in Fort Portal some time later this month. So in the meantime, we had the sub zone level, which involved 5 local schools battling it out on the field, and then the week after at a sub-county level, which is as far as our school's hosting goes ...
Both sports days began with peeling copious amounts of matooke (which I have to say I'm rather handy with now!), then off to make an (amazing!) modest, banner, and collect our pure glucose sachets. Ugandans don't believe that the answer to exercise-induced stress is water, but pure glucose, which generally ends up on more occasion on the child's head, than in their mouth.
Then out on to the field: the day begins with a boys' 5000metre, and then down to the 100m sprints, and all field events. Watching the 5k was incredible - Edikenzo sure was right, these boys have stamina! Ugandan inventiveness with regards to sports never ceases to amaze me ... for the high jump, two large banana plants were placed along a broken-up pit, with small wooden markers stuck into them, and a reed to demarkate the height. I will say that I have lovely photos (my camera's working!) which also does mean that I have brilliant photos of 'close, but no cigar'.
After sports day 1 our school was declared the winner; however, our central sub-zone came second to the West in the second week! Nevertheless, I'd like to say a hearty well done to all the kids who participated, ad all the teachers for putting on a good show!
After all the hubbub of sports day preparations, we've managed to host Rosie's brother and his girlfriend - the lovely Charlie and Lucy - who managed to get very much into sports day v. 2.0, despite their mild sunburn .... And we've also celebrated Rosie's birthday! Yes, I can make a victoria spunge on a charcoal stove, because I'm brilliant like that!
