Our ferry pulled up to the Ko Phi Phi pier just before midday on Tuesday 21 August, whereupon we were immediately swept ashore by the wave of other tourists and day-trippers. Once things had calmed down, we found a small little local place to eat and then went in search of somewhere to stay. After quite a bit of walking around, we found a simple little bungalow, where we dumped our things and then headed straight to the nearby beach. Towards the evening it started raining :-/ so we went to get some pizza for dinner while the rain passed. We returned to the beach to watch the sun go down, before heading back to our room to bed.
Wednesday morning we were up early and, after a quick breakfast, spent the rest of the morning on the beach. (The sun is up early there, so its hot from around 9am.) Again we were inturrupted by the rain, but it wasn't very much and soon passed. That afternoon we got on a long-tail boat and went off to do some snorkling and see some of the islands. We had a great time swimming - the water is warm and clear but the stuff to see underwater isn't too interesting. On our way back we stopped at Maya Bay (the place where the movie The Beach was filmed) to spend some time on the beach, which was very cool. The area's been a bit overrun since the movie, but the beach is still probably the best we've ever seen. The sea was pretty rough on our way back. causing everyone in the boat to get completely soaked. We had a fun day out, but in the end were glad to be back to our room and a hot shower! That evening we had dinner at this cool little restaurant overlooking the ocean and then ate ice-creams as we strolled back to our room.
Thursday we were up early to pack and then headed down to the pier, picking up some dodgy cinnamon buns for breakfast on the way. The ferry across to Krabi was SO overloaded it was a joke, but fortunately we made it across without issue. We caught a local bus into town and from there, another local bus to the nearby little coastal town of Ao Nang, where we would spend the next few days.
