Our overnight train down fron the north of Sweden was long and in the end we were so over it that we just couldn't wait to get off. We arrived in Copenhagen main station in the late afternoon on Sunday 18 November and, after getting our bearings, we set off to our hostel. It was a bit further than we thought, so it was dark by the time we arrived. We quickly had a much-needed shower and then Monique and I took a walk around the neighbourhood where we found a slightly dingy looking pizza place where we had dinner - a pleasant change from our recent diet of sandwiches! Afterwards we headed straight back to the room to sleep.
Monday we checked out of the hostel pretty early and headed into the city center to do a walking tour. The sun had made a welcome appearance but it was still bitterly cold - even with all our warm gear on :-/ Our layed-back Australian guide took us on an interesting walk around, weaving through the city around the canal, towards the harbour and eventually finishing up at the royal palace. Afterwards we made a quick stop by the famous mermaid statue and then had a late lunch on the ramparts of the [kjfgbkf] overlooking the harbour. The sun was setting as we wandered back through the old town back to the hostel, where we picked up our bags and then rushed off to meet the CouchSurfing host that we had arranged to stay with...
Mikkel was really cool and friendly and immediately made us feel welcome in his home. He cooked up a delicious stir-fry dinner which we ate while chatting about South Africa and what it's like to live in Denmark. Mikkel works in the tourism industry and it turns out that he has lived in and travelled to South Africa and around the Western Cape on a number of occasions so it was great to chat to someone with a bit of knowledge of home :-)
Tuesday was our last day of sightseeing in Copenhagen so, even though it was cold and overcast, we were up pretty early, packed our bags and headed out into the city. We visited the royal palace again, where we saw the changing of the guards, and then visited museums for the rest of the afternoon to escape from the weather. In the evening we made our way back to the apartment where we had a quick dinner with Mikkel, before saying our final goodbyes and rushing off to the train station to catch our overnight train to Amsterdam.
UPDATE: Feb 2013 - Mikkel came to visit! Even though you weren't able to stay with us this time, it was great to see you again bro! Our first (and only, so far) CouchSurfing friend that we've seen since getting back home :-)
