We arrived in Vienna late in the afternoon on Sunday 28 October. Having a rail pass allowed us to travel in first class, so the trip was really comfortable :-) We caught a metro to our hostel where we quickly dumped our things and went out to get some food for dinner. Monique managed to cook up a delicious meal in the tiny kitchen downstairs, which we wolfed down before making our way to bed.
Monday we were up early for a quick breakfast before heading out into the city to explore. It was freezing cold and snowing so we were super grateful for the first-world public transport! Using the metro and trams we were able to get between all the sights pretty quickly and easily. We saw some amazing buildings that are hundreds of years old. Many of them are now museums but some some like the university and the parliament still operate as they always have. With all the walking around we soon got hungry and found a cool little restaurant down a side street where we enjoyed some delicious schnitzels for lunch! Warmed up and energised, we braved the cold for a while longer and saw some more sights before making our way back to the hostel where we had dinner. That night we got our culture on and went to see a performance at the National Opera House building. It was quite a cool evening actually - the performances were quite modern and original, and walking around the building during the interval was also fascinating. We caught the metro home and crashed into bed exhausted.
Tuesday morning we packed up our things, checked out of the hostel and walked the short distance down the snow-covered road to the metro station. Soon we had arrived at the main station, where we boarded a train heading further East - onwards to Budapest!
