Fraser Island - Day 3 & Sunday
Saturday 6th February
It was a fairly early morning start again, we were in the cars and ready to go at 8am this time though. First port of call was Lake wabby. It's funny because for the whole trip we never really knew where we were going or what was to happen next, we'd just convoy in the jeep and then turn up to a place and be told what we were to be seeing. This was partly because of the tide situation being fairly unpredictable and partly due to the bad weather. We therefore turned up not expecting the 45 minute walk that was ahead of us to Lake Wabby. Lisa, Laura, Vicky and I ended up doing a toilet run and therefore being 10 minutes behind everyone else. Despite Dave saying he wouldn't abandon Vicky and us, he went ahead with one of the guys so it was just us four girls trekking through the wilderness barely prepped with water swatting flies, getting sweaty and chatting away to keep us going.
We eventually made it there and as we came out of the forest we saw huge sand dunes to which was the environment I thought most of Australia would be more like. People were rolling down the hills to the lake but we chose to take a steady walk (safety first!) The lake was actually really nice, a mild temperature of water despite the bad weather and lots of little fish in that would eat away at your skin if you stayed still. It was relaxing to spend some time there before we fought back up the sand dune, into the forest and made it to the jeeps at the other end. Finally it was time to go back to the ferry crossing point and take us back to Rainbow beach.
Returning to the mainland, we spent a lot of time fathing around at a service station before Garie kindly offered to drop us back to our hostel, and Julia to her bus stop as everyone else got back on a bus to Noosa. We hugged everyone goodbye and realised we would be seeing Yael (lovely lady from Israel but now lives in New York) on our Whitsunday trip next week and most of the others would be in Cairns when we made it there (our last stop in Oz).
We then had some confusion checking into our hostel which was supposed to be called one name but turned out to be closed and was next door taken over by Dingos we met our room mates two of which were Swedish Emilie and Kevin who we later ended up seeing at pretty much every hostel we went to and a girl who was about to do a skydive the following day so was very excited. Lisa and I went off on our own through some creepy roads and worrying about spiders and snakes to a sports bar that Garie recommended that evening for dinner which was lovely and then chatted to a few of our room mates before going to bed. It was interesting that one of our room mates was friends with a girl who went to school with Charlotte one of my best friends. It's rare to find anyone else travelling from Coventry let alone knowing the same people so we had a nice chat to her (Hannah Rodell) and a good laugh about another coincidence that she also had Garie as her tour guide two weeks earlier on her Fraser Island trip and told us how he got ridiculously drunk which is why we thought he snook of to bed early with our group. It's nice anyway how you can be on the other side of the world and meet someone from home off on a similar adventure. After that and a chat to a really funny girl trying to get us to go karaoke with her, we got off to sleep.
Sunday 7th February
Lisa and I went for breakfast in a lovely cafe by rainbow beach and then attempted to go to the beach. I say attempted because when we got there, we sat down and began a nice girly chat before it got so ridiculously windy that the sand grains were like little shards of glass cutting into us. We ran back to the path with our towels over us for safety and bumped into some of our room mates off on a walk along the beach and despite being invited decided not to go back to the painful glass. Instead we went back to the pool area and just chilled out.
Later on we checked out of Dingos hostel and got the Greyhound bus to Agnes water. There was an unexpected 3 hour delay where we were pulled over due to something technical being wrong with our bus. When we did eventually make it to the next stop we bumped into Julia again who was getting on and off at another stop. It wasn't until 10pm when we made it to Agnes water, a minibus packed loads of us in with an enthusiastic hippy lady telling us all about our hostel Southern Cross. We arrived in darkness to this country-side type hostel and got straight into bed.
