It's Friday 13th and our last day in the city. For a quick last sight we went to the AMCI museum of moving images. There were heaps of interactive gadgets to keep us all entertained. Zoë made an animation of herself and Oli played packman. Our childhood tv's and games consoles were on display as if they had come out of the ark. We picked up our hire car which had been upgraded to a Nissan X-trail (think I could get used to driving it), though not sure how practical it would be back in the UK and thirty three dollars for parking later we said goodbye to the city.
Back in Belgrave accompanied by Meg, Ashlea , Fred & Sandi we headed to Philip Island the highlight of the trip so far. We stopped for shark and chips typical aussie tucker before watching the penguin parade. At dusk rafts of fairy penguins slightly taller than ankle height make the trek from the sea to their burrows on land while being observed by hundreds of tourists sitting on the embankment. They are the cutest penguins we have ever seen and move around in their waddles for safety before running across the sand where they are seen as prey by the many eagles lurking. Occasionally one will catch fright and they all turn around and run back into the sea before feeling secure enough to come out again.
Saturday brings our final day in Victoria. After giving Sarina an hour or so to be home from hospital with the new arrival we popped in for some lunch and a cuddle with the 4 day old James. Meg said her farewells until we see her again in Queensland as a Taylor Swift concert was calling her. For our final evening we packed our deck chairs and picnic rugs for an evening's carol service in the cool (freezing) forest of Sassafrass. The Dandenong and Sassafrass rangers entertained us with well known carols, in true aussie style though some of the words had been changed and Santa and his reindeer were driving a ute. A couple of schools had choirs joining in on the stage with some over enthusiastic singers who were chosen for their aah factor a bit like Ashington CE school choir. Because of the fire risk it was flame free and we lit up the evening with battery operated candles. To much excitement at the end of the evening Santa arrived lights and sirens blaring on a fire engine dishing out sweets to the younger of us in the crowd.
