Kennington to Cape Town
Our plan on arriving in Cape Town was to stay with Camilla's old friend Antony Clements. Antony is a surgeon for race horses and has lived in South Africa for over four years. He is a keen polo player so it seemed apt that we meet up with him at a game at the Durbanville race course. Even though the match was considered a friendly it was still an exciting match to watch. Antony's team scrapped by with a narrow victory and the polo ponies were put through their paces. It was a very stylish way to arrive!
After a few beers we headed for the road to drive the final 35kms of our trip from London. We followed Antony's car along the Cape Town motorways and saw Table Mountain for the first time. Ant took us up to the top of Signal Hill to watch the sun go down over Cape Town and produced a bottle of champagne to celebrate. It was an amazing way to finish off our journey and we topped it off with a meal at a local Turkish restaurant before crashing out for a well earned, if slightly sozzled, night's sleep.
We woke up the following day to find that we were staying in the most incredible house in central Cape Town. Rather than kipping on the sofa which we were expecting we found ourselves in own bed with crisp linen sheets, access to a well-stocked fridge, satellite TV, a heap of Sunday papers, broadband, a washing machine, a warm shower and a bath!
After spending 8 months on the road, experiencing some of the roughest terrain and wildest weather in Africa, we have now realized one fundamental truth: you can't beat a warm bath, a comfortable bed and good food enjoyed with friends after driving 25,000 miles across Africa. Thanks Ant!
The week ahead will be filled with sorting out the shipping, catching up on emails, UK news, satellite TV, going to the cinema, dinner parties, the latest cricket scores, plenty of sleep, wallowing in baths, getting our hair cut, shaving Rich's beard and guzzling as much champagne as our livers can manage! Hurrah...we made it!
