Kennington to Cape Town
The big event in Swakupmund was that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were staying only a few kilometers from our campsite. Unfortunately, not even the presence of celebrities could halt the unusual weather conditions that hit the Namibian Coast. Slightly miffed that Brad and Ang didn't pop round for a cuppa, we decided to head south to find better weather. We were heading to Sossusflei, a desert that, according to our guidebook, receives 10-20mm of rain annually. So, at least we can dry out in the desert...or so we thought...
It was a beautiful drive through the Namib-Naukluft Mountains, via the great sand sea of the Namib Desert. This area of the world feels completely untouched, with the pristine dune and rocky outcrops. We spotted kudu, oryx and bat eared foxes walking through this barren landscape. Akin to a horror movie, the gravel road surfaces filled up with menacingly armored beetles, known locally as 'Tok-Tokkies' due to the noise they make when they rub their legs together.
That night we bush camped in a rocky pass and the air was filled with the noise of these "Tick-Tokkies' so much so that although we were in the middle of nowhere, on our own, we had to resort to ear plugs to get a decent night's sleep. The pneumatic drills from the building site back home didn't seem so far away from us now!
