Kennington to Cape Town
Having been a little jinxed with the weather in Southern Africa it came as no surprise to us that Swakopmund was to receive the most amount of rain the region has experienced in 8 years over the Easter period. We had already got used to coping with freak wet weather in South Luangwa - again with John and Cathy - so we are beginning to wonder whether we should meet up again?!
Despite the rain we decided to prepare a monster fish extravaganza to celebrate Easter day. The only snag was that we needed to catch our supper ourselves. We spent a great Easter morning getting cold and wet on the Skeleton Coast picking mussels. They were some of the biggest mussels we have ever seen and with our fishing licences we were allowed to pick fifty each! As the wind howled around us John prepared his array of fishing rods to see if we could catch a main course!
Chanting the mantra 'it's not about the fish - it's about the fishing' to keep our sprits up we were all surprised when John caught a large Atlantic fish, perfect for the bbq. The next two catches were adolescent sharks - unfortunately not edible but they gave a great fight! Bill was ecstatic to catch another cob so we had a great fish feast ahead of us. We didn't manage to catch a thing, but seeing the action and also viewing a seal surfing in the waves made putting up with the Atlantic chill very worthwhile.
That night we had a magnificent meal of mussels (with three sauces!) and barbequed fish - delicious, and hugely gratifying as we had gathered the fish ourselves.
From here we are planning our route down to Cape Town, doing the usual chores (buying new tyres, washing the car, de-dusting everything inside the car, washing the clothes, bedding etc). We are constantly surprised at how busy we are...we had hoped to have days doing nothing on this trip but there is always something to do!
We now look forward to visiting the dunes in Sossossflie then heading out into the Naukluft mountains and Namib desert to put Biggles through his paces. Our next update is likely to be when we arrive in Cape Town to finish our journey through Africa. We look forward to celebrating with family and friends when we arrive in Cape Town in early May. Until then....WE WISH YOU A VERY HAPPY EASTER!
