Crazy...busy...sweaty...humid...neon lights...skyscrapers...these were the images I had in my head before I flew into Hong Kong and the place certainly didn't disappoint. Unfortunately for me the weather was rubbish the first two days, still 28c, but thick, low cloud, heavy rain and still about 100% humidity...not the type of climate I would want to live in I'm telling you that now!
I managed to find my Guesthouse easily enough, my private ensuite room was about the size of a matchbox, but clean and secure which is all I need really as I'll only used it for sleeping. It was situated on Nathan Road, in the heart of Kowloon. I got ready to go out and bring my umbrella...I wasn't going to let the rain spoil my time in the city. Wednesday is free museum day so I spent the morning learning about Hong Kong's history; saw its Art and also the Science Museum. They were pretty cool. I walked along and saw the famous HK skyline and walked down the Avenue of Stars.
I felt like a celebrity...of the 7 million residents living in Hong Kong, I barely see any western faces as I explore the area. A lot of the Chinese people just stare at me, or whisper or smile. A few even come up and ask for a photo with me...I found it hilarious.
Hong Kong is a great place to just people watch, I saw locals performing Tai Chi in the early hours, old men asleep on public benches Chinese women just spitting on the street. The Cantonese language seems very abrupt and angry like to me. All very interesting to observe, I could watch people all day. There were also a lot of annoying Indian and Africa hawkers on the street bothering you to buy a fake designer bag or tailor made suit...NO Thank you!!!!!
So many amazing designer expensive shops...if only I had the money...after getting depressed on the first day I decided to ignore my low budget and treat myself a bit. It was the end of my trip and I hadn't brought a nice dress in months and months...so I ended up buying three!
I took the ferry on my second day to Macao, China. It was an hour away. Thank god I had my passport in my handbag anyway as I totally didn't click that I was actually entering another part of China and Passport control! Macao is a really strange place, it's owned by the Portuguese so instead of English all signs are in Cantonese and Portuguese, the main square is very beautiful and has European influence. I visited St Pauls Ruins, Senoma Square and just walked about. Macao is also famous for being the second Las Vegas (and its recently outstripped Vegas in profits!) there were so many huge, luxury casinos...you even had the famous chains of Wynn, The Venetian, Hard Rock and Crown! I wondered through the casinos, they are so amazing! I watched this incredible free show at The City of Dreams casino; it was one of the most visually stunning shows I have ever seen, 'Dragon's Treasure'. It was inside a dome and everything around you turned to a high tec video screen, so you felt like you were inside it...Amazing!
Macao of course is where I went the final length, to really top my amazing year off to the max by doing the WORLD'S HIGHEST BUNGY JUMP....at 233m it is damn high! My stomach dropped as the fast glass lift flings you up to the 61st floor. It is insane!!!! I was so excited though, I love this kind of stuff, a true adrenaline junkie I got hooked up straight away and didn't hesitate after the 5 second countdown before I jumped through the clouds and rushed to the ground below...It was amazing!!! I enjoyed it so much I went back in the evening when everything was lit up and the view was more incredible and I did a second jump...this time backwards...as I heard it was worse...Wow...I was buzzing for a long time after that! I got the video, I love it, and it's on my FB page for those who still haven't seen....What next though? 2 sky dives, 2 Canyon swings, hang gliding and 2 worlds highest bungy later...I wonder how I can top all of this!!!
It was so random on the free shuttle bus from the Venetian Hotel to the ferry I saw a Hed Kandi Pool Party advert for the hotel...that would have been cool!
I got lucky as I woke up to Blue skies for my last day and my flight wasn't until 11pm so I made the most of the full day. Hong Kong has this amazing system where you can get an express train to the airport...but the train station has an official airport check in where you can check in your bags up to 24 hours before...it's such a great system as saves you paying to store your luggage or have the hassle of carrying it around, then you just turn up to the airport, go through security and onto the plane...they already take care of your bag!
I took the double Decker bus up the steep windy hills and started to get the incredible views as I reached the top of Victoria Peak. I was so lucky with the weather, perfect clear views over the HK skyline and water, it was stunning! Then I got the famous steep tram down to the bottom again. I spent the rest of the day shopping and got a bite to eat, watched the famous Light show at 8pm at the harbour, then headed to the airport!
I can't believe it is all over...365 days later....WHAT A YEAR!
