So the ferry/bus was an interesting experience. It was an overnight ferry that left at 9pm. I did not expect to see tiny thin mattresses covering the entire two floors of the ferry/boat. I was stuck right in the middle by the engine. It was roasting, extremely noisy and to top it off I was sleeping next to some crazy frizzy haired old lady! I was not too pleased. I think this is the first time I got a little frustrated with the transport situation. I could handle 22 people in an 8 seater minivan...I kind of laughed it off and embraced it, as I tried with this but I must admit it did get to me a little. So I though the best way to pass time was to attempt to sleep through it. I stuck in my headphones and somehow (I really don't know how) drifted off to sleep! I woke up a few times tossing and turning but the next minute we are all getting off the boat and filter into different tuktuks. The next leg of the journey was minivan. I was stuck at the back, with no head rest...but again, somehow managed to drift off a little. I must have been exhausted from the past few days on Koh Tao! The ferry to PhiPhi was longer than expected (about 3 hours I think) but again, slept on that too J
When I arrived at PhiPhi, I started heading to Rock Backpackers, a hostel that Lonely Planet had recommend. I stopped two girls on the way and asked them where I should stay, and they were staying there too so thats where I ended up. I think in the 3 months of travelling, I have never stayed in a more grimy place than this. It was a 14 bed dorm, all the beds were so close to each other, not much space to breathe and the walls were covered in graffiti. Most comments on the walls were extremely unpleasant. In fact you will see a photo I took of the images and comments I was faced with every morning when I looked up at the wall above me! Yes, a picture of a man having a w***! I won't go any further, but you get my point! An innocent girl like me should not have been staying here. Haha. The beds were rock solid too, but I managed to fall asleep on them for the next 3 nights luckily. I met with Freya (19) and Andy (34!!)...we went on a boat trip (long tail boat took us to 4 bays, including the famous Maya Bay where 'The Beach' was filmed) for some nice food and drinks in the evening...and played a bit of jenga too!
The following day Freya and I got up early to explore the island. We went to the view point in the morning in our rain jackets (it was raining!) and then took a scenic route around the island to long beach. It was much quieter there. Seemed like a holiday destination resort rather than a backpacker, or youth place so it was very relaxing. Freya and I treated ourselves to a Thai massage. You can see Freya having her back seen to outside in our parlour J Very relaxing.
In the evening Freya and I had dinner by the seaside and then attempted to do a bit of shopping, but neither of us bought anything. We had some drinks but had an early night as we were both shattered. In the morning, I said farewell to Freya and went to explore a cave in the sea with 4 other guys. It was awesome, despite us all getting some cuts and scratches having to swim under some rocks in the sea to get to the cave! It was incredible and no tourists were here either. We had a swim around to see some fish and then headed back to the main land. I treated myself to spaghetti carbonara (Omg I'm so glad I did, it was amazing and a real home comfort. I think I had been resisting Western food for too long, I just needed something different to rice and meat or noodles!) It was so nice, despite the fact that it was about 120 baht. But TOTALY worth it. The afternoon was spent planning my next few days and booking accommodation. Cassie decided to come with me so booked up where I was staying too! Yey company for me! We went to Banana Rooftop bar to watch 'The Beach' but it wasn't on, they played 'Djenga' instead so I headed to bed and watched Homeland 2 with a guy in the bed next to me J Thanks Lottie, I'm loving this Homeland program!
