So I really enjoyed Singapore. I thought it was a fabo place! There were lots of areas to explore including Chinatown, Little India, Arab street, all the quays and not to mention the billion and one shopping centres which you really can get lost in. And they seem so quiet and relaxed even at the weekend because there are so many and they are so dispersed. Therebis always building work going on, they are always building something new, bigger and better. The underground train is extremely sophisticated - much more impressive than the London underground. There are glass walls protecting you from falling on the train tracks that slide open when the train arrives. The stations on the line light up green and red to show you which station you are at and which station you are heading to when you are on the train. They also have green and red lights to show which side of the train you need to get off before it arrives. The taxis are also cool because they are used like our buses and have electric signs saying "hired", "busy", "on call" and "shift change"! I dont think I saw a taxi that was free but it probably just said "free" or something.
It really is a beautiful place with some beautiful colourful buildings, lovely green park areas and some great wall art too. To me it felt a bit like London with massive buildings, poin Singapore after travels ..h apartments and sweet little roads. There are many people dressed very smartly, walking around in suits for work but even just out and about ones 'image' seems to be very important here. All the ladies are very pretty in dresses, high heels, lots of make-up and lovely shiny hair (quite the opposite to a traveller, especially me!) one big difference was the cleanliness of the place, the diversity of people, but more friendly as all expats communicate with each other and the laws were crazy strict too. To name just a few...
- no chewing gum
- no crossing the road unless at pedestrian crossing
- no grafiti (some of the walls would be covered in paper so that people could do street art)
- no drinking or eating on the train. If you did there would be an announcement telling you to stop
- no littering on the floor. If you were caught you would be fined ?..I could go on and I probably don't even know half of the laws still.
I think Rosie broke the law every day some way or another.
I felt like I had come out of a time machine into the future..people on ipads, phones, kindles...in fact any kind of electronic equipment. I looked around on the underground train one time and there was at least 80% of people using an electronic device it was crazy. Not very sociable I must admit! But London trains are like that too, people reading books or newspapers or listening to music.
So the first night I didnt arrive until about 9pm after a long bus journey. Rosie took me to a food court down the road that is open 24 hours. We ate beef noodle soup and had a yummy fruit shake for about $9 Singapore dollars altogether. I think you just half it for pounds so not too expensive either.
Rosie had work the next day so I did a bit of sorting, shopping and strolling around Little India. We went for a run when Rosie got back. She took me on a running tour around what it felt like most of Singapore! We ran for over an hour in the heat...yes I was dying. My legs were like jelly by the end of it but it was cool to be able to see so much of the city in an hour. We had showers and then went out for dinner in a more sophisticated food court by the river. We went to the big hotel which has the 3 tall buildings with a boat shape structure on the top. We ended up going up all 3 buildings and ended up at the rooftop bar which was amazing. Great views!! But extortionate drinks so headed back down for a more decent priced drink,
Sunday Stu and I had a mini workout in the gym before setting out to Orchard Lane, the main shopping area. We did a bit of shopping and then tried out some posh dumpling restaurant. The dumplings were amazing -they were filled with pork, shrimps and vegetables. So good. It was Paddys day so we ended up chillig and chatting with a free pear Magners by one of the quays and lots of people dressed in green! It was a good night. Then I managed to skype the parents when I got back
Monday was very productive. I went to Chinatown, little India, Arab street, tried lots of food in a famous food court...and bought a Samsung Galaxy Tablet which I am currently typing on! I love it :) it was a long day walking all day until 9pm! Then we went to try and get into Block Party gig which was outside. We tried the bushes but got caught so ended up sitting on a bench listening to them instead. Then had a nan bread on our way back :)
Tuesday was a day of sorting...bank had blocked my card as somehow money was taken out in Vietnam - OHDEAR, so I spent the day sorting that out as well as packing, sorting my laptop out so I could leave it at Rosies and making sure I knew where I was going for my flight to Oz that evening. It wasnt a fun day and I was glad when it was over. I arrived at the airport with an hour and a half spare...I dont know where time went. I was sorting tax back on my tablet purchase, changing money to oz dollars and sorting a few things out for the post. The next minute I looked and it was time to board the flight. I was starving so grabbed myself a kfc type thing for $7...I didnt care how much it was I was hungry and didnt have time to mess about. So I got on the plane...had 2 seats to myself (GET IN). I was either sleeping or eating. I didnt realise they would give us a full meal when we got on the plane but hey I wasnt going to refuse free food so I had that on top of my kfc dinner which I was already full on. Ops. And then I woke up again and they were serving breakfast! So great timing - I got a yoghurt, fresh orange juice and a croissant! So good!
Im almost up to date now...im in Adelaide so will update you soon but its been pretty relaxed and chilled catching up on sleep ect.
Lots of love xxx
