It rained all night and it rained all morning on Tuesday (glad we got of Fraser Island when we did!). We did our laundry, cleaned everything up and left at midday. Today was an exciting day for the lads as they bought themselves new tents! After several nights of waking up in puddles of water, I think they had enough and decided it was worth spending the money on a decent tent that they would stay dry in when it rained. $60 they got a 2 man pop-up tent each. Lisa and I had a chuckle watching the lads try and fold the tents away in the shop. It wasn't quite as simple as putting the tent up, but they managed after a few tries. We did a shop at Big W and then drove to Bundaberg where we stayed in a camp for just $25.
We ended up spending the night with Tim, a guy who we met in Byron Bay who was also staying at the same campsite - what are the chances! He was a cool chilled out guy and the lads seemed to get on with him well too, it was cool. I enjoyed making my own nachos with refried beans, it was delicious. This is the first campsite I have been threatened to leave by the owner. Not my fault I must add. Tim decided that it would be funny to put some cockroach on my back...it ended up going up my top and around my front. As you can imagine I was screaming like crazy and jumping around taking my layers off trying to get it off. OPS! It was about 11pm, so the owner came out in his blue jumpsuit and was fuming that I had been screaming. He did admit in the morning when I apologised again that he had a really tough night with some drunk lads so he accepted my apology and we were all friends in the morning! Stefan and I ended up chatting all night in the kitchen until about 1am. I agreed that I would wake him up in the morning to go for a morning run.
Wednesday 15 May we were up at 6.30am and ended up going on a 10k run. Yes we got a little lost in the forest and had to back track a little and ended up running into a massive spider's web, running through boggy terrain ...but hey we did see a wallaby! It was a fun run and really nice to have a running partner for a change. He was good because he pushed me to run a little faster than my norm too. We had a fun morning visiting the Bundaberg Rum Distillery ($25 each). It was really interesting to see how they made the rum and where they stored it. They make everything to order too so they have to be really efficient. As I'm not a fan of rum I agreed to drive the rest of the day so that Lisa could drink the samples - she would get more satisfaction from it. We drove to Hummock lookout and had some lunch on the picnic benches outside. I love being outside eating lunch in the sun with great views and great company - I will miss that so much! We grabbed a thick milkshake from one of the towns by the sea and then headed off to Agnus Water (which Stefan initially thought was a famous lady! Haha) It was a quiet campsite. After setting up our tents Lisa and I enjoyed museli with the cold milk we bought and then made a campfire ALL BY OURSELVES. We were so chuffed. It didn't go out once and it was a decent sized fire too. We sat around the fire and chatted all night.
Thursday 16 May was a rather uneventful as it rained all day so we camped out in Busters cafe with a Chai Latte, free internet and eventually a pepperoni pizza. So good! By 9pm we decided it was time to leave so ended up driving to our campsite and having a party in our car...until the rain stopped. Bed time wasn't until the early hours of the morning. It's amazing how much fun you can have simply sitting in a car with good company!
Friday morning we were on the water learning to surf by 11am. For just $17 each we had a 3 hour surf lesson. It was a perfect day to learn with the sun shining and a calm sea with a few good waves to practise standing up on. It was great fun despite the fact that I was regretting going to bed so late ( I think I could have stood up on the board a little more if I hadn't have been so tired)! Live and learn Kelly, live and learn J After a quick lunch we drove to Gladstone, did a Coles shop and stopped off at Tannum Caravan Park. Brodie made an amazing sweet and sour meatball and rice dish it was delicious! We were all so impressed.
Stefan and I did our morning run (just 7k this time). That morning I went to meet Mark (Aussie guy I met in Saigon) for a coffee. It was so nice to see him; it felt like a good old catch up with an old friend from home. We had so much to catch up on time went a little too fast and before I knew it we had to get back on the road to make it to MacKay. It was Stefan's night to impress us with his cooking...and he succeeded too, we had a very tasty Thai Curry. I think Lisa and I chose well with our travel buddies - good cooks! Hehe.
