Palawan, Coron, Philippines South China Sea. The lazy days of beaches. After Africa and the constant moving around Sangat Island here in Coron Philippines is relaxed. 35 minutes out of Coron by speed boat we are on a small one resort island surrounded by an underwater sanctuary. We can easily snorkel off our beach with no riptides or strong currents. Our first room was a two story Villa with its own private beach geared more for honeymooners then us two. So we shared our Villa with a troop of monkeys who would visit and steal anything that we did not put away. The villa was at the end of a long boardwalk and once and a while a couple of people would walk on out and see where it went, each time was like having your favorite neighbors over giving them the full villa tour as we were so far removed from the others on the main beach.
But after three days we were kicked out and moved to a tree top cottage where too the monkeys would come watch us as we showered as the shower had a floor to ceiling window facing the mountainside. I did complain to the management about the leering monkeys and they assured me that they would seek counseling for the monkeys. Being on the main beach we stayed up late talking with a huge mix of people from just about everywhere, trading stories of the day's dives and encounters.
Joy and I had not dove in four years so getting back in the water was a little nerve racking but once there we enjoyed the great reef system here and seeing all kinds of new fish. Palawan is known for its World War 2 wrecks and I was sure to see these as Joy really had no interest in them. Diving on my first wreck was a little shaky as the visibility was low and we dove fast. I had a bit of a panic attack my heart beating wildly and gasping for air at 50 feet down is scary. My dive master saw my troubles and we floated back up from under the wreck and I calmed down. The urge to push the button that races you to the surface is hard to resist but luckily we were by ourselves and soon we were enjoy this huge cargo ship that lays on her side.
The fact the she is laying on her side is kind of dizzying because you want to look at her right side up. The fish on this wreck were over the top, I saw the biggest Lion fish I have ever seen and an Alligator fish that I never knew even existed. Once inside the wreck I floated next to the huge boilers and the rutter. Back on trip.shore we drank beer and shot the breeze till we all were talked out. In three days' time we head back to the skies to Manila and then Korea where we should once again be able to see our breath. Not for long as we board a southbound plane to Fiji and a sailing adventure that should be the highlight and finale of this
