The Last Wolf Pack and their Photographers Adventure
Siem Reap was where we would say goodbye to Luke and Josh before they went to Sihanousville (Jealous) and we went back to Bangkok to fly home. We have had the best month and a bit travelling together so we had to have leaving drinks.
First we went to Angkor Wat and watched the sunrise, leaving at 5am. It was unbelievable and a must see. We spent the day exploring the temples tomb raider style and being driven round by tuk tuk. The temples were incredible, like huge 3D jigsaw puzzles the way they have been put back together. The temple of faces was still in the process of being renovated but the archeologists had done so much that we were able to go up to different tiers and get a closer look at these faces that stood high. The detail of the carvings in the rocks was unbelievable. My favourite temple was the maze of stone and trees where tomb raider was actually filmed. Trees and branches had grown up through the temple floors to create new organic shapes and archways. The strength of nature against heavy stone reminded was very neo romantic.
We were home by 12pm and had time to nap before our big night out. Dinner at a noodle bar to line the stomach and bought some raspberry vodka to pre drink with. A decadent night of shots and buckets was lots of fun. We walked around looking for kareoake and couldn't find it anywhere. We ended up in Triangle bar which had seats that swung so I made swinging chair friends. Then the boys asked the live band if they could sing a couple of songs and they said yes! Luke and i took on the groupie role, Luke photographing while i tried to get people cheering! So after a wonderfully drunk rendition of Natalie Imbrulia's Torn and Backstreet Boys As Long As You Love Me, we left and bar hopped till the boys dropped. Neil and I ate a pizza smashed but that didn't stop the worst hangover i've had in months KO me the following day.
After a horrendous hangover day for us all we spend the next couple of days paying $5 to lay by another hotels pool, taking in the hot rays of Cambodia and saying goodbye to Luke and Josh over some lovely meals. Met up with Nicole and her friend Robin the same night we said goodbye to Josh and had a mini catch up.
Our last day in Siem Reap without the boys we went to Tonlé Sap Lake, the biggest in South East Asia to see the floating village. There are over a hundred floating villages on the lake as it is so large. It was $18 each for the boat but we got a driver and a guide and hoped the money would go towards the poor lake families. The village had floating convenience shops, market, restaurants, basketball court, school, orphanage school and Catholic church. We went to see the crocodile farm and fish farm. About 20 huge crocodiles in the ground of one of the floating platforms. Families and children would float up to you in boats and beg, or have snakes wrapped round their necks for a photo and money.
We has fun in Siem Reap, a street called pub street, lots of good restaurants and lots of day and night markets to stroll through. I think we could of managed to spread our time differently and get to the coast but it was nice to have more days to relax rather than constant bus journeys. There was a power cut for our last few days which made for a very sticky night. Luckily the generator came the next day so we had some air at night. Cambodia is probably the hottest country I've visited and also has the most loveliest of people who are always friendly. It's sad to see small children begging around town, their favourite line "I don't want money I want a meal" small children carrying babies in one hand and the other poking you. I got slapped on the bum by one cheeky boy.
