We arrived in the ancient capital of Vietnam in not so ideal conditions. Our 12 hour bus journey actually took 23 hours (even to this day, we have no idea why) and a heavy rain storm was in full force. Within a few seconds of our bags been taken off the sleeper bus and been moved to cover, they were soaked. Our initial hostel of choice was full and the day (not ideal in these conditions) and the day was quickly fading, thankfully the hotel next door was available.
As stated above, Hue was the capital city from 1802 until 1945, during the ruling of the Emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty and was the location of one of the most intense battles of the Vietnam war. Although restoration is taking place, evidence of the battle can still be seen in bullet holes and shrapnel marks across the city. To give you an idea of the intensity of the encounters here, only 10 of the major buildings remained out of the 160 that initially stood.
History and conflict aside, Hue also offered us our best night drinking since leaving England. Brown Eyes bar (slogan: Open 5pm until the last one passes out) is a little bit different to your stereotypical bar. Free shots every half an hour? Why not! Buy one cocktail, get one free? Sure! Strong redbull vodka buckets for a few quid? Now you're just being silly... Free pool and classic music only add to the experience.
Another Vietnamese city done and another great South East Asian experience. Great food (with the odd exception), hotel like accommodation for £5 each and enough culture to explore when the weather allows.
The drug dealers on scooters every 5 minutes do get a bit annoying, but if Vikki has taught me one thing on this trip, it's if you say 'go away or I'll fart on your head', they do. God, I bet they love drunken tourists...
