It feels like Bangkok. It has the same population as Greece. And it's Vietnam's largest city. Welcome to Ho Chi Minh City.
The bus arrived early. Something I've come to dislike about overnight buses. Exploring a new city at the crack of dawn whilst being tired is bad enough, made worse when half the hostels are shut because you're early.
Our hostel is... Average and it costs more than we wanted to pay. It doesn't have ants, but nor does it have a powerful shower with hot water. The luck of the hostel draw.
The plan was initially to spend two days in HCMC, but the joy of not having an itinerary is, if it doesn't feel like your sort of town, you move on, meaning we have a six hour bus journey to Cambodia tomorrow (14th).
Caffeined up from a 7am brew, we purchased our bus ticket ($10), visa fee dollars ($20) and rented a motorbike ($3.50 each) for the day.
First stop, the War Remnants Museum. 'The museum is specialised in research, collecting, preserving, and exhibiting the remnant proofs of Vietnam War crimes and their consequences.' I agree, they do, but it's a very one sided display. Of course, the superpower that is America had more resources and were fighting abroad, the consequences to Vietnam were going to be worse, but the displays would make you think Vietnam did no wrong and some of the displays seemed unfeasible.
We decided then to head to the Cu Chi Tunnels, a gateway of tunnels used in the, yep, you guessed it, the Vietnam war. Our constantly backfiring motorbike somewhat sounded like a gunfire battle. The roads are hectic. No, more like mayhem. I don't know, you just have to see them to understand how many bikes can be squeezed onto the streets.
Returning to our hostel, someone on a motorbike tried to steal my phone, thankfully, I had a tight enough grip that they didn't manage to get their dirty mitts on it. Obviously these things happen in the majority of cities in the world, unfortunately it was a bit of a sour ending for a fabulous 3 weeks touring Vietnam.
"Vietnam. You don't know, man. You weren't there."
