The next few days I went sightseeing in Delhi.
I went to the massive sandstone Red Fort. Being a a bit of History buff, I really enjoyed walking around, taking in both the Mughal and British structures around the fort.
The other sights I visited included Jantar Mantar. An odd collection of terracotta buildings that were used as astrological instruments. There was India gate. A huge memorial structure near the Government buildings. And Humayun's Tomb. A beautiful Mughal tomb constructed with a two-tone combination of red sandstone and white marble. It was truly a sublime sight. The Obamas were taken here for a visit when they were in Delhi.
For one lunch I had to try an Indian McDonald's. Whilst the decor and set up is like any other round the world, the menu is completely different. I'd heard that the McMaharajah burger, India's equivalent of the Big Mac, was pretty vile so tried a McSpicy chicken burger instead. Was surprisingly good.
The day after Diwali, I was invited to go to a party with Sonya. It was hosted by Seema and her family, who I had met on Diwali. I had a fantastic evening, talking over drinks and fine food. Seema is a hugely talented artist. Some of her pieces are currently being exhibited at the new terminal at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Her home is a colourful, dynamic art gallery with her work on most of the walls and furniture.
I left Delhi with both fantastic memories and a new family in India.
