Next morning I was woken by an almost deafening noise outside the hotel. The local church blared out a 5.30am wake up call. I had set my alarm to watch the sun rise anyway so wasn't too bothered. The sky was full of cloud and it had rained during the night. The sun rise was a massive let down. Couldn't really see the sun at all. At least I could say I have watched specks of light rise over three oceans. Hopefully the sunset would be better.
After grabbing some breakfast I visited the temple. A 3,000 year old shrine dedicated to the goddess Kanyakumari. I was given a tour by one of the temple singers. I then met a fellow traveller who arrived the same time I did at the hotel. Mairead, 28, from Ireland. We had similar plans for visiting Kerala in the south so decided to travel together to Varkala.
After we took a ferry to see a giant Hindu statue just off the coast. It was enormous. A bit like the Colossus of Rhodes.
In the evening we tried to get a good view of the sunset. It was still quite cloudy. We did however compensate for the disappointing meteorological conditions. We had an excellent seafood dinner at a hotel before retiring for the night.
