J: we got to our "urban farm" lodgings late, it was a couple of travellers that set up a B&B for other travels. After a good nights sleep we set off in hunt for breakfast. We found out the main Union Station has lots of food places, but the actual station its self was stunning (possibly more decorative that Grand Central in NYC),then we found an excellent Asian food place and filled our bellies with something spicy.
Then we headed off to the United States Capitol, unfortunately the famous doomed roof is going under a 5 year renovation but the building was still impressive and we went inside. After a walk around the history exhibit we got on a guided tour. We had funny little headsets to hear our guide as the group was big and there are lots of groups. The tour was excellent and the information was interesting. The thought that all the modern laws/policies are scrutinised and passed in those room was interesting.
S: we got to walk through some underground tunnels to the Library of Congress. The library itself was beautiful but we couldn't get in without going through lots of security in another building, and the request to go in of 'just because I want to walk about in there' may not be a valid reason so we moved on. We walked down the mall to the Washington Memorial, and we over heard a tour guide saying it had taken about 50 years to build due to lack of resources. Finally they asked different countries to donate a stone to help finish the monument, you can see the colour change in the stone about 150ft up, where they restarted the build. The WWll memorial was beautiful to see and we met lots of veterans on a trip from Ohio to pay their respects. You could see how proud they were to have fought for their country. The cherry blossoms around the memorial were dropping their petals whilst we were there and it was so beautiful to watch in the surroundings. We walked around the peace lake, such an iconic place where many films have been produced the one we thought about was Forest Gump.
J: just to keep adding to this iconic day we strolled in the sun to the Lincoln Memorial, and wow what a place, the sculpture is huge but it was also a perfect stop to sit on the steps for a while and look up the Mall at all the monuments we had just past. The Americans defiantly know how to be proud and commemorate their heroes like no other. We then headed off to the Vietnam memorial for the American soldiers that died, it was sad to think all those people died in a war that arguably shouldn't have started.
A little walk further and then there it was, the White House, home of the president and with the security to prove it. There would be no intruders to those grounds, not with out getting shot quickly I'm sure. It was a bizarre building to be looking at, almost super famous in films and TV and we were there standing in front of it. We went round both the front and back just in awe of being where we were.
S: we decided to treat ourselves to a few beers and buffalo wings for the evening at a place called 'Harry's' it was a true American dinner. As it would happen neither of us have never been to a Hard Rock Café, so we went and had a great burger to share with a few more margaritas. I think it was safe to stay we were drunk at the end of the night - good times.
