J: We arrived in Pai after a route that takes 762 continuously tight corners over the mountain, thankfully we where at the front but I still felt a little iffy, they actually make T-Shirts for this journey. When we got there we found a lovely little place to eat and it was the first good Thai curry we had had so far.
Later we walked about the town, renting a bike here is cheap and it seams every tourist jumps on one for the first time and instantly crashes or falls off! The amount of people hobbling with bandages was comical. I even mentioned to Sam one girl looked nervous and the next corner fell off, one person even accelerated into the row of bikes out the front of the rental shop.
S: It was scary; I certainly wasn't going to drive!! So we rented a bike, and drive to Mor Paeng waterfall, which was freezing but we obviously had a quick dip. It wasn't a massive waterfall but still beautiful in its own right. Back onto the bikes and set off to see a massive White Buddha and the Temple on the hill. The Buddha is massive and the stairs up to it are still being built, it didn't matter that it was a small hike to the top. The views were stunning, well worth climbing up.
J: After this, we rode along a beautiful road to the natural hot springs. Neither of us had seen these before so when we found out we could buy some eggs to cook in the 88 degrees hot spring at the top and we just had to have a play! It was fun placing the basket in the pool and waiting, we had 3 eggs and did them for varying times. The 9-minute had a runny yolk and white, both cooked but sloppy. The 15-minute had a runny white with a firm yolk center, and the 20-minute had an almost formed white with a solid yolk. Somehow the spring seamed to cook the yolk quicker than the white, really odd but made for a fun lunch. We went down to the part you could bath in, the first one was 36 degrees apparently but it was a lot hotter than my baths and I quickly had to move down to the cooler one..... 34 degrees! Everyone could only spend a few minutes in the hot spring before needing to sit on the side to cool. These had some special minerals in the water, which was meant to be good for the body, but I think we both just enjoyed the novelty of a hot bath in the forest!
S: After our luxurious bath, only shared with a few hundred people.
We headed to the Japanese bridge built during World War II to transport weapons and provisions to Burma. You can only walk over it as there is a new bridge built alongside for traffic. We still had one more place to visit that day which was Pai Canyon, and we wanted to be there for sunset. We arrived and walked around a found a comfortable spot and waited like the patient people we are for 2 hours (we knew the time of sunset but we were early). But luck wasn't on our side for a beautiful sunset and the cloud soon moved in and we couldn't see a thing lol.
J: The next day we got picked up early and headed for something different.... Piranha fishing! As soon as Sam noticed it in the area it was added to my bucket list ready to be scrubbed off.
We got to the place and it was beautiful, out in the mountains and our room was the best we had had so far. We got a crash course on how to fish the lake, which had over 30 species in it, got a beer and sat ready. The first fish I landed was a "Common Silver Barb" I wasn't impressed by the name until Dave the owner of the place looked impressed, weighed the fish at 1.6kg and it was only the lake record! It turned out the Thai record is only 2.2 kg so this was a great example. I got my name on the record board and a free beer.
Smiling like a kid on the play ground I then pulled in a Piranha! A piranha was in my hands, it was a whopping 2kg, a real man-eater, (ignoring the fact this breed was veggie) and I had caught it!
Happily Sam also started to catch fish too, she wouldn't remove the hooks but was holding them.
I later caught a 2.6kg Piranha but the biggest catch of the day was a 3.6kg Walking Catfish. I even got carried away and started night fishing with glow sticks, and I wouldn't give up until I landed one lol.
We also met up with some other couples during the afternoon and we all had a session on the beers, it was a brilliant day.
