Well folks it's finally here, the long awaited next blog update on Karla and Duncan's adventures in London.
This weekend was what the Brits like to call The Summer Bank Holiday long weekend.I'm not really sure what that means, and I'm not going to question it.If I'm getting a day off work I'm going to accept it and move on.
So, Friday night saw us celebrate the start of the long weekend with farewell drinks for a work mate of Duncan's in the city. We started the night and a little bar called Alabi - It's actually the first 'bar' I've been into in London with all previous drinking sessions being held in various pubs.Anyway 20 minutes, 2 vodkas and 2 shots of something unknown into the evening, I thought it was time to put the breaks on.I was told these people partied hard but that was a little too hard for me!After a few hours at Alabi we moved onto a night club called Abacus.
I had my first ride in a London Cab, which was, surprisingly (or not so) quiet dull.Upon arriving out our destination we somehow we managed to get ushered past the long line of people waiting to get in and down to the dance floor where our pals for the evening had secured a private area. It's here we boogied to some truly tragic music before leaving to catch the last tube train home.Something anyone who's been to London will tell you - the music is tragic. For a Kylie fan like me it's candy to my ears but for the rest of you it's just a cringe fest of pop.
So that was the beginning of the Summer Bank Holiday long weekend.
Saturday saw a halt to the adventures - I was sick, not the hung-over kind, but the I've caught Duncan's cold kind.So I spent most of the day in bed, watching our new 22inch LCD TV.Our room is small o.k. and 22 inch was all that will fit without making us cross eyed.
You have probably all heard me complain, on more than one occasion about the less that perfect summer weather we've had the past few weeks.Well the weather gods took pity on Londoners and turned it on for the long weekend.Think blue skies, think sunshine??I was actually able to dust of the thongs (sorry flip flops) and shorts.
Sunday the adventures continued with a train trip to the seaside.Brighton.We started our explorations at the beach - well I think you still call it a beach when there's no sand?Just pebbles.Duncan laid down on them - surprisingly not as uncomfortable as he thought they'd be.Mind you he didn't exactly say they were comfortable either! So we checked out the pier - just like Luna Park really but on a pier, fun if you're under 10 but otherwise a bit tacky.Maybe if they'd had fairy floss it would have been better. But they didn't' so we didn't hang around for long.
We lunched on the water front and then wandered around the little laneways that meander from the beach back up to the town.We had a look at the Royal Pavillion - some old Royal Residence of some old King.It looked interesting enough from the outside but it was such a lovely sunny day that we didn't' bother spending the time to wander through the stuffy interior.
Some Ben & Jerry's Ice cream and we hit the road.
In a nut shell Brighton reminded us both of St Kilda - and whilst it was pretty cool, we wouldn't rush back there again in a hurry. Not when there are so many other places begging to be explored.
That brings us to Monday, glorious Monday.Although the weather had cooled down a little, forcing me to abandon my shorts and opt for jeans, nothing could dampen my spirits on Monday Morning.See, Monday was the long awaited shopping day.All day.
We had a lazy breakfast and then jumped on the tube to Kensington High Street. From all reports Kensington High Street is as good for shopping as Oxford Street but without the crowds (believe me, you need full body protection to take on the weekend crowds in Oxford Street - It's like opening day of a Myer Stock take sale - every weekend.)
Realising that perhaps shopping wasn't going to be Duncan's idea of the greatest day out, we started with a hot chocolate as fuel for our feet for the miles of walking we were about to do.The morning saw us undertake reconnaissance work, checking out some of the stores to see what's about (and work out which shops we can afford!).We stopped for lunch at a decent enough Italian Café to refuel and prepare for the main event.
And what an event.1 bag, 1 pair of shoes, 1 jumper, 1 pair of pants, 1 shirt and £200 later. I was spent.Duncan did actually buy something, it wasn't all about me.Eh, who am I kidding his 1 T-Shirt doesn't count, it was all about me.High Street Kensington defiantly didn't disappoint.Only problem now is that I have that shopping bug?????????..
We'll defiantly be going back, if not to shop to have a look at the side streets and gawk at the homes of London's 'Uber Rich' (as a recent newspaper article put it).Kensington is the London's most exclusive suburb were you'll find the likes of Sir Richard Branson, Keira Knightly, Kylie Minouge, Sir Elton John??????
So that was the Summer Bank Holiday Long Weekend Adventures. Not to shabby weekend as far as things go.There are a few photos of Brighton that I'm about to post so check them out if you're interested.
