Well today was quite an interesting day! I'm sure many of you are wondering about the picture. I'll get to that, but I'm going to start from the beginning of the day.
Today we headed south on the same highway we were on yesterday, only today we went further. We saw the mountain goats again today, but one was very close and we got a good look at it and some good video and pictures. We went past this tiny town of Girdwood, which literally is nothing more than a gift shop, a restaurant and a gas station. We didn't stop-if we wanted to see a tiny town like this, we'll go to Central Illinois! Anyways, we did stop to see Old Portage and the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. Old Portage is this old town that was destroyed in an earthquake that hit the area in 1964, which lowered the land about 10 feet. Portage was never rebuilt and what remains is just a ruined ghost town. Right next to this was the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, which if you look at our pictures, the pictures of the animals except for the mountain goat were taken there. This is where animals who otherwise cannot survive in the wild are taken. It was kind of neat, but not really worth the $20 admission in my opinion. But at least the money we paid will go to a good cause.
After that we headed to the Portage Glacier. Most of this glacier is melted so honestly there isn't much of it to see. However, the glacier you do see is very blue as is the water it's in. After that we headed to Whittier since it was only another 6 miles down the road and we prefered to go there than another hour down the road to Seward. This is where it gets interesting. We get to the entrance to Whittier and there's a tunnel. We then realize we're driving through the mountain to get to the town on the other side. The tunnel's about 2 miles long and then you're in Whittier. Whittier is where our cruise ship takes off from tomorrow. It is a very pretty town. Unfortunately it is not very developed and you got the feeling the people who are there don't like outsiders. It would have the potential to be a really neat touristy town, but at the same time I would imagine winters aren't kind to this town. We weren't there very long when we decided to go back through the mountain and head back to Anchorage.
When we got back to Anchorage, we went hunting for a late lunch. We found this Chinese restaurant but it was closed, so we went to the other one just down the road. We thought it was a fast-foody place, but it totally wasn't. It was this very ornately-decorated chinese restaurant. It was a pretty good lunch, not what we were expecting at all.
Now the significance of this picture. We headed back to our hotel and relaxed for a bit and we took a nap. After we both woke up and were watching Mythbusters, Chris looks at me and akss "do you hear that? It sounds like water running." Of course I can't hear anything, but he turns the AC and TV off and we open the bathroom door. The sink in our bathroom has backed up and water is dripping all over the floor. We call the front desk and they come to our room right away. They then move us to another room so they can fix the drain. They moved us to a suite with a dining table, a couch and love seat and a hot tub! Of course, they didn't charge us any extra for it. So it actually worked out alright!
So after we moved around and such, we went to a movie. We went to see The Hangover-halarious movie, I recommend it. It was kind of wierd getting out of the movie at 8:30 and the sun makes it look like it's 2 in the afternoon.
It is almost midnight here and it's cloudy and kind of dark. We are both finally going to sleep as we have a lot to do tomorrow-turn in the rental car, check out of the Hotel and get to our cruise ship. Our cruise leaves at 9:30 PM but we'll be checking in to our ship around 3PM or so. Hopefully we won't have any flooding in our bathrrom on our cruise ship, that would be very bad!
