If you ever wondered what baseball team they root for up here, the true answer is none since this is truly Hockey country. Game 7 of the Stanley Cup last night was their Super Bowl. However, if they had to pick a team, it's probably the Seattle Mariners or the Chicago Cubs-I've seen a handfull of people walking around wearing Cubs and Seattle Mariners stuff. But it makes sense since those are the two teams that are televised around here (WGN is broadcasted up here-we get it in our hotel room).
Anyways, today we woke up at 4:30 am local time (7:30 Central). We tried to stay up last night to get into this time zone, but we just couldn't. We were both asleep by 7 local time last night. We'll try again tonight. The thing that's really trowing us through a loop is the lack of darkness. When I was up at 11 PM it was still light and Chris said when he was up around 1 it was also light. When we woke up this morning, the sun was where it is in Illinois around 8 am. The sun doesn't even really move in the sky either. You know how the sun is in a different spot at 9 am than it is at 5 PM? That's not really true here. You can't even tell by the location of the sun what time it is.
After we got up and ready and had breakfast, we talked about what to do today. We couldn't decide what to do and what we wanted to do was too hard without a car, so we took a cab to the airport and rented a Chevy Traverse. We are very glad we did that. If any of you ever come to Ancourage, don't do it without a car-this is not a walkable city. Honestly there isn't much in Anchorage of interest. It's what's just outside of Anchorage that's of most interest.
We took a scenic drive down the Seward Highway, which is considered to be the most scenic drive of anywhere in America. It goes along the inlet from the Gulf of Alaska called the Turnagain Arm and through Chugach State Park. The stops included Potter Marsh, Mchugh Creek, a few other creeks, Beluga Point and numerous points to see wildlife (mostly birds and mountain sheep) and the mountains and water. The drive is absolutely beautiful and unlike anywhere I've ever been. We saw a lot of different birds and even saw some mountain sheep! Apparently we had just missed a moose and her 2 babies when we walked up to a trail. Missing them was pretty okay with us, because apparently they were very close and as we all know, you don't mess with wildlife and their little ones!
Check out the pictures I have posted. Soon I will post some video we took of our journey today. We're headed to dinner for some good Alaskan King Crab soon. Should be good!
