We trekked for hours over mountains and through the forests just north of Chaing Mai before reaching the Karen Tribe who were our welcoming hosts. The local children arrived to sing us their songs before they introduced themselves:
"HELLO TOURIST... WELCOME TO OUR VILLAGE"
After 20 minutes of thai song the focus turned to us. Their teacher asked for a song. We panicked. Our fellow German and Dutch tourists looked at us blankly and after a feeble rendition of Happy Birthday, followed by a weak Spanish led Maccarina, we knew we were losing the crowd. Holly whispered a song in my ear. Would the European know it, would the fire act as a dealth hindrance? We went for it.
We put our left hand in. (They followed) Our left hand out. (They followed again). We repeted twice and shook it all about. Before long we had the whole collective of 15 tourist and 30+ thai children from 3-13 doing the Hokey Kokey around the camp fire. Their first.
