I'm in paradise! Literally, I have never been anywhere this perfect. Koh Rong is a picture postcard come to life, the perfect destination to kick back and relax. The sea is turquoise and the sand the shade of powder white. We have a beach hut 10 metres away from the sea with a balcony, hammock and solar power. This wasn't supposed to be the case but the man who took our booking made a mistake meaning we unfortunetly had to be upgraded to a $40 a night hut, equipt with en suite, solar power and 6 beds! Behind our hut is thick Jungle with lush green colours where we often see locals picking fruit and children clmbing the trees, we have been told the Jungle is home to venamous snakes and that there isnt any anti-venom on the island (oh great!). I see places like this is magazines all the time and now Im here typing this on my balcony with french cafe music in the background living the dream.
By the time we step off the 2 hour boat we know immedietly the 2 days we have booked here aren't going to be enough. The island itself is very under developed with no roads and no tourist shops. The beach outside our hut is a 4km stretch of idlyic perfection however on the other side of the island is an even bigger 7km beach which apparently has feaured on the front of the NY times as a world top 10 beach. The resort it made up of 20 beach huts and a large communal hut where there is a bar and resturant as well as lots of puppies! This place is getting better and better by the minute.
Now, me and the sea have't seen eye to eye since our trip to South America and I now think this is the perfect time to re-kindle our relationship. The warm waters and bold colours are too much to resist and it isnt long before we're both in the water. I even get my hair wet, and those who know me know this is a big deal. We spend the afternoon lounging on the beach soaking up rays reading old copies of Vogue and Elle which I have found along my travels.
We spend the evening in the bar chatting to people who originally came to the Island for 2 days and are still here a year later. Deserted islands don't come around very often and when you find one as scrumptious as this its easy to understand why people get stuck here. Tom soon gathers a small crowd by finally getting the chance to perform his magic tricks. I watch over him cringing as he needs to improve his showmanship and he gets the tricks wrong quite a bit.
Morning comes and we wake to the sound of waves and lizards. We awake to find we have been eaten alive during the night and I have itched myself to bleeding point. Great! I should be used to roughing it now but I don't think I will ever get over the constant fear of bed bugs and mosquitos.
First things first Tom rolls out of bed into the sea to wake himself up, I sit and watch in the hammock before taking a 30 second stroll to the bar where we order pancakes. The morning is spent floating in the sea and day dreaming and finding excuses as to why we should extend our stay here. We are slowly running out of time in Asia and we already have a night bus booked to Battambang. This problem is soon solved when the manager rings up the bus company and changes our tickets, we decide this place is worth missing out on Battambang and instead we are now heading straight to Siem Reap. So thats it sorted,we are one step closer to being another one of those guys who comes here for 2 days and 1 year later are still sitting at the bar.
Im currently sitting here in the bar watching Tom playing volleyball on the beach. The rules are once there is a winning team all players run into the sea, the losing team has to buy beers and the last person in the sea has to fetch the beers and then launch them to the other players. This is pretty scary when the sun goes down and beer cans are just flying into the sea in darkness!
One thing I have learnt on this trip is that me and Tom are completley different. Tom has a very short sitting still doing nothing threshold and within 10 minutes of sunbathing he is up walking around pestering me with alternative things we could be doing. However I do use this to my advantage as he will gladly get up and wander to the shops and get me a cold can of Coke. Where as me I find it incredibly easy to do nothing for hours, I could sit on this beach all day and slowly fry myself if it wasn't for the bugs. We've reached our 6 week mark in SE Asia now and this is our holiday from holiday and a much needed one. The constant trawling around cities and night buses soon wears away at you and its nice to come to places like this to take a breather.
Our last full day has arrived (probably) and it starts off the same as any other comparing how many bites we gathered during the night. We stroll down the beach to breakfast we should be en route back to the mainland this morning but like the 90% off people that come here we have extended our stay. The day is spent lying in the sand squatting flies and reading books. We go on a hunt for another beach, we scramble over rocks and walk through a small but of Jungle until we come across a beach with golden sands and tall treehouses, its nice but not as nice as ours so we head back for round 2 of sunbathing, I haven't done my back yet.
We had a great time here on Koh Rong and I wish we had more time to be able to explore the other islands that are off the coast of Cambodia. I have never been somewhere which is so close to paradise. I will 100% be coming back here!

Emma Becker I am going to Cambodia on September this year. Besides Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam are also listed to be visited. But still I have a question about a hotel you might have seen during your visit in Siem Reap. I booked the following hotel: Tara Angkor Hotel. You know if it is a good hotel? I heard good stories about it. What are the best attractions to visit in Siem Reap and in the surrounding?
Holly Hello Emma, I read your message and wanted to help you, because I have been in Siem Reap a lot of times. The Tara Angkor hotel is a beautiful hotel and is ideally and conveniently located, Tara Angkor Hotel is situated only 6 km from the Angkor Wat Temples, 15 min drive from the Siem Reap International Airport, a few minutes stroll to the Angkor National Museum and a short ride to the city town center with an array of Cambodian souvenirs, shopping and culture. They have a few promotions that you can make use of if you haven’t booked already: Last minute bookings, summer sales, early bird promotion or Angkor temptations. Of course there are a lot more, but have a look at their website. It is not that far to the Angkor temples that I would advise you to see for sure. I would say, grab yourself a 3 day pass and find yourself a decent tuk tuk driver to take you to the farther ruins and for a drive in some of the outlying villages. If you’re up for it consider renting a bike and checking out Angkor Wat on your own. There’s a lot to see and do so a lot depends on your time and budget. A few temples I would strongly suggest you check out besides Angkor Wat itself are Bayon Temple, Angkor Thom and of course Ta Prohm just to see the amazing tree. The Banteay Srei temple is farther out of Siem Reap but has a very different feel than a lot of the others. If you want to do something else as well, you can visit the day and night market. I can really recommend these attractions. If you need to know more, let me know. Regards, Holly
