I woke to the sound of torrential rain and grabbed my coat out of my bag as I packed up the last of my belongings. The hostel were kind enough to allow me to leave my bags in the hall until I finished work so I braved the rain to reach the hospital. Despite all the water outside I arrived to find all operations postponed due to a failure in the water supply. Once it was restored a busy day began. I spent the morning moving from theatre to theatre as patients came in, setting lines, placing LMAs and intubating.
I had a quick lunch so I could watch a brachial plexus block and the day finished at 3. I chilled at the hostel for and hour or two before dragging my stuff to Fairoz's apartment and meeting her brother, Muhammed. Having been told he spoke no English, I was surprised to find he had a good grasp of common words, and was much better than I was as Arabic despite Fairoz's lessons!
We took the monorail to pick up Fairoz from work before continuing on to catch the Light Railway to the bus station. Being rush hour we had decided not to take a taxi as the roads were chocka, but even so everywhere was packed and the going was slow.
We finally arrived and booked tickets for a 7.45 coach to Melaka Central. The luxurious seats and air con made it a relaxing journey following our mad dash across KL and in no time at all we had arrived.
A short taxi ride later and Raymond, who owned the hostel, was kindly welcoming us into River Side Lodge in the 'old town'. He made us some cold drinks before showing us the sights on a city map even though it was 10 o'clock.
Once pointed in the direction of the street markets we explored China town and Jonker Street which was packed with stalls trading food, antiques and souvenirs to locals and tourists alike. Behind the traders sat Hindu temples and old Mosques in between the traditional houses hung with Chinese lanterns.
Keen to try some of the local cuisine we started with a shared plate of chicken with rice balls before trying some of the street vendors. My favourite was a white carrot with egg and soy sauce but neither Fairoz or Muhammed was keen on any of the food.
As everyone started to pack away around midnight we headed home for a great nights sleep in a, properly, air conditioned room with the best beds I've found so far.
