I took a three and and a half hour bus from Coff's Harbour to Ballina (home of the big prawn - another big thinf to add to my collection) where I was picked up by a lovely bloke called Graeme. Graeme is the owner of the YHA in Lennox Head where I was going to spend the night.
Lennox Head is about twenty minutes drive south of Byron Bay and a little out of the way so may people by pass it. I only came accross it when I was reading through my Rough Guide. The thing that attracted me most was Lake Ainsworth. Lake Ainsworth is a big freshwater lake right next to the ocean but it is surrounded by Tea tree plants so the whole lake is basically diluted tea tree oil. After settling into my room, I put my bathers on and headed over to the lake. The weather to be fair was pretty awful put I dashed out between the showers and managed a half hour swim. The lake was freezing but once I had given your body temperature time to drop it didnt feel so bad. As I lay just under the surface of the water my whole body looked the most vibrant burnt orange colour and the smell of tea tree oil was incredible. It such a refereshing sensation swimming in the crisp waters and I had great fun swimming after ducks! Hehe.
Back at the hostel I made myself some lunch and got talking to a South African lad called Angus who was one of the other three people staying at the hostel (it was very quiet). We ended up talking and attempting all the puzzles in the newspaper - we were an unstoppable force! Hehe. We then both went up to the headland to watch all the windsurfers whom had all decided the weather was far to bad and retreated indoors. To round the night off we sat down to watch Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - fab film, crazy ideas - I am going to have to read the book!
Lennox Head was lovely and quiet, it made a nice change from the rush of big cities and gave me a chance to just sit back and relax. Now on to Byron Bay....
