Sandy streets and island sun...
We finally left Valladolid and made our way to Chiquila on the North Coast of the Yucatan. There's not much to be said about Chiquila; it doesn't even rate a mention in any of the guide books. Its basically a stepping stone to Isla Holbox. It has to be the cheapest place that we've stayed, but we did find it a little difficult to find somewhere to eat as most of the restaurants were closed! We eventually found a couple of fantastic locals to feed us for lunch and dinner, before bedding down early so that we were fresh for the next morning's day trip to Isla Holbox.
The ferry to Isla Holbox was efficient and friendly. We took one of the early rides which was full of locals, some possibly on their way to work for the day. Isla Holbox reminded us of Isabella in the Galapagos, with its sand streets and laid back locals. It was slightly busier than Isabella though, with plenty of places to eat. After an enormous and delicious breakfast we headed to the beach to chill out.
The beaches on Isla Holbox are very pretty but lack the crystal clear water of the nearby Carribean. They're pleasant enough though with their palm fringed white sand shores. We enjoyed a brief swim before heading into town to make our way back to Cancun. Altogether a not too bad way to say goodbye to Mexico!
