Saying our farewells to Guatemala we headed towards Honduras to continue our adventures. What we were informed would be two busses and 10 hours travel time somehow turned into five busses and 14 hours travelling time! Crossing the border was painless but as it was much later than we had expected there were no busses to take us into our destination, Copan Ruinas. Luckily for us though an Honduran who spoke English offered us a lift with her family but then charged us for it! Grateful to have arrived we checked into a nice little hotel, grabbed a bite to eat and crashed.
The following morning, not so bright and early, we headed to the ancient Mayan ruins of Copan. We walked around the site for a couple hours checking out the famed carvings from this particular site. Chitchen Itza, Lamanai and Tikal are all known for their grandiose structures and Copan, its carvings. We also check out some tunnels that showed how the Mayans built over the top of existing structures multiple times and so we could see layers on layers of ancient structures which was really cool.
After some lunch (terrible!) we check out a Macaw Sanctuary. Here, set amongst a lush green habitat and a beautiful river running through its centre we saw heaps of different species of exotic birds. Ranging from owls, macaws, toucans to parrots. Kate spent half an hour speaking to one bird and thinks she taught it how to laugh and that she was a bird whisperer. I thought she was just on some meds that I didn´t know about... At the end of our self guided tour through the sanctuary, we had the fortune of holding and playing with six or seven macaws. They were free to fly around the sanctuary and came back at sunset to sleep in their cages. One of them liked the taste of Kate´s shirt and chewed a hole in it and another tried to steal my hat!
This all but finished our time in Copan Ruinas and that night was spent enjoying a hearty meal and watching a movie at the restaurant´s cinema. Pretty lame but exactly what we needed. Craving the beach and sunshine we were excited to get on the bus to head to the Bay Islands!
