Kari goes to Lincoln, England
I woke up a little before 5am, ate some cereal, got ready, finished packing and left a little after 5.20. I was at Court 4 by 5.25. I called Christine but didn't get an answer. Ten minutes rolled by and I was starting to get worried. I was being to think maybe they had already left because we were supposed to meet at 5.30. Finally they came out, and I was so relieved. We starred walking and met Annette at the shed. We were walking and Shannon was like its 545 and we were still three blocks away, our train was at 550. We walked really fast and ran the last block, we got there with about two minutes to spare. We had an hour ride to Nottingham and then a half hour wait at the station there. We were on another train and switched at Derby. We were on the next train for two hours and I slept most of they way. I woke up and we were sitting at the Bristol/Temple Meads Station. We left and eventually got off in Bath where is was really warm and sunny and took yet another train for an hour to Salisbury. Annette and I sat by this little boy playing with his dinosaurs, he was cute!
Our first task when we got to Salisbury was to find information. We walked for a long time following signs that all pointed in the same direction for the information center. One sign said to turn, and we got lost and ended up making a square so we could have just gone straight instead of turning.
After information, we looked for the hostel, which was another long walk. The lady behind the desk wasn't very positive. She said Oh none of you are members, there's four of you? We got a little worried, but instead of staying in the main building we got to stay in the back shed one and it wasn't that impressive. Shannon & Christine the Canadians were in one room and Annette and I were in another room.
We dropped off our stuff and headed in to see the town. Earlier when we were lost, we had walked through a market, so we went back to check it out. It was mostly fruit and random odds n ends. I hadn't eaten lunch so I bought a pork roll, which turned out to be pretty tasty. We thought it would be a good idea to get food for later that night. I considered buying a pasty but thought this pie thing looked good so I went for that instead. We walked around a little more and decided to check out the cathedral, as that was the biggest attraction in the town of Salisbury. On our way there we walked through this cute archway and took pictures. We also took pictures of the houses around the cathedral; I think this is called the close or something. Then we saw the cathedral, it was pretty impressive. The spire is 404ft tall.
We walked around this courtyard area first and then entered the cathedral. It was very pretty. We took the guided tour and the lady was really good. She was wearing a cute teal green sash that said cathedral tour guide. She knew what she was talking about and had lots of funny tidbits to add. The Cathedral was cool.
Then we went to the chapter house, which is connected to the cathedral. It had a copy of one of the four magna cartas left out of how many originals I can't remember. I have also seen the copy at the Lincoln Castle. The one at the chapter house at the Cathedral was in a lot better condition because you could actually see the words and read the letters. The one in the castle is really faded and wasn't that cool to see. Cameras aren't allowed at either place, so alas no photos.
After the Cathedral we weren't sure what to do. We took a different way back from the one we came and found another cute little archway. We wandered into a few shops and got kicked out of one at 5 because it was closing. Everything seems to close at 5 in this country.
There wasn't a whole lot else to do so we headed back to the hostel and just hung out watching TV. It was relaxing and I haven't really watched TV since I have been here. I tried to eat my pork pie (see photos) and it wasn't good, kind of a mistake. I warmed it up, but that didn't really help. I should have gotten a pasty because they said the people who got those said they were really good. We talked to a lady who was staying at the hostel. She was really friendly and asked all of us where we were from.
At one point we were talking about English guys, I don't think she is originally from the UK. She was fun to talk to. Shannon and Annette went to bed around 9 and Christine and I stayed up watching the rest of Millionaire and this ice dancing skate off which we had been watching earlier. We talked to our friend some more. I really like Christine; she's cool and easy to talk to. We were talking about smoking here vs. in the US and Canada and it was interesting how we both thought they smoked here way more and such. I think it was around 11 that we finally went to bed. The beds were not that comfortable and the room was really hot. I kept waking up and didn't sleep that well.
