Kari goes to Lincoln, England
I think it was around 10am when we woke up. We got ready and took the bus into town again. We were going to see of the sights in Dublin today. We had walked around Dublin yesterday for the festivities and saw parts but wanted to take in some of the sights today. First we stopped at a cute little pub where Christine and Annette had Irish breakfast, which is very similar to English breakfast. I had just eaten yogurt and a banana on the bus and wasn't hungry. Shannon and I just had tea. I can never have too much tea!!! I love it!!
We went to the tourist info place again and decided that we would go to the castle and headed there. But it didn't open until 2 so we went to see the cathedral first. What can I say it was pretty but it was another church. I might have been more impressed but I have seen so many churches that they are beginning to look all the same. It was cool though because it was St. Patrick's Cathedral. This was also a sad experience for me because it was here that my camera died for the trip. The battery had changed to 3/4 earlier in the day so I thought I still had a bunch of pictures; guess not, because I had only taken about 10 that day. When I had been in Bath a month ago I got about 20 pictures taken after it started flashing 1/4 so I don't know what happened here. I was just really sad because the trip was only half over this point and I was done taking pictures. And no I didn't really want to buy a disposable camera. There were three other people with me who had digital cameras and I could get pictures from them, but it's just not the same when you can't take your own photos and know that you took them.
After that we went to the Castle but this didn't really look like a castle on the outside. We got a tour of the staterooms and had a half hour wait so I took a nap on the bench while we were sitting there. I can sleep anywhere. The rooms were beautiful and I found out that much of the castle was destroyed so the parts that looked more castle-like have been destroyed. Between rooms I heard the tour guide talking to the one girl and said something about four Irish tourists were walking around and everyone else was leaving town and I didn't know what he was talking about till I heard him say we tried to go to the Pentagon but got there too late and the guy told them to come back the next day at 8.30am. Well due to jet lag they couldn't get out off bed and didn't make it and that is why he loves jet lag. I guess he was in DC around September 11. He was a really good tour guide who knew what he was talking about and how to present it with a number of funny stories. He had a nice speaking presence and it was easy to follow him. After the tour we walked around some more and decided to check out the market but it wasn't what we expected or else it was over, but there were a few vendors left and aside from that it was a mess with lots of fruit and vegetables everywhere. I had read that there were supposed to be crafts and things there (in the st pattys brochure) but maybe we got to the wrong one. Anyways we were on this main street and did a little shopping. We tried to find a pub to eat at once again and they were all packed. We did find one eventually and discovered why they were all so full. It was the final game of the six nations Ireland v. England. The Six Nations is a Rugby tournament and this was the final game for the title. I had heard that the game was on Saturday afternoon but had forgotten.
When we got there, the game had just ended and so people were leaving. It would have been cool to be in the pub for the game to feel the excitement especially when Ireland won because that is where we were. But oh well. We ended up going to the same pub again and it was just as good as the night before. If you know that something is good, why not stick with it? While we were ordering Christine started talking to the people sitting by us and asked where to go. They recommended Johnny Foxes, which is a pub up in the mountains. We decided we would explore that tomorrow. They said we should check out Kilkenny the next day, as it was a very cute little city. And for the nightlife for Saturday they told us about this place where there was Irish dancing and music and told us to go to the Temple Bar area also. These people were really nice. We found out that they were from Belfast and then we told them we had been there and they wanted to know what we had liked the best and we weren't sure what to tell them because we had been there for such a short period of time. It was all enjoyable I guess.
After eating we headed back to change and get ready to go out. This was crazy because we tried to catch the bus three times before we got on one. Two of them drove right past and we didn't understand because we didn't know the buses that well. Finally the third one picked us up. It was pretty late by the time we got back. First we went to Panama, which was where Christine and I had been the night before. We had hoped to find our friends from the night before, but they weren't there. And the place just wasn't as fun as the night before so we crossed the river yet again and checked out the temple bar area. We had gone through this area the night before but it was so packed. Well tonight was no different. Christine was talking to this guy while we were walking and I don't know what they said or what came up but he found out I was from MN and said Brainerd to me but then something about Virginia. I was so confused. But anyways we went with him to this bar and it was a hopping place, but we didn't get to stay long because Annette is claustrophobic and wouldn't come in. We were going to go home but Shannon and I really wanted to go back to that pub. So we told them we were going to stay. Kind of a repeat of last night, only tonight Christine seemed mad at us. Oh well. It wasn't as much fun when we went back because it was getting pretty late at this point and people were starting to leave. We did join some random guys in a few pictures and had a pint of beer. It was good night yet again. I love Dublin - it's a fun city!!!!
