Once again, it was up and at 'em early.....although not as early as originally scheduled! Today we got to sleep in and didn't have to be ready to go until 6:30 (the original schedule said 5:00 am!). Oh happy day! Today we had a fairly slow day with only three activities planned. We started off our day with a snorkel cruise that departed from Port Allen, Kauai. Our Captain was Manu and his crew were Comma, Jason and Bronson. We leisurely cruised along the coastline just watching the scenery go by until we came upon a pod of spinner dolphins. This was my first time to see spinner dolphins and I thought they were so cool and fun to watch! This was a small pod, but they loved showing off for us as we took a little break. We actually saw two more pods of dolphins during our cruise.....no whales today though. However, we did see some flying fish and a tuna that was trying to catch one for lunch!
As my blog title today said, words cannot begin to describe what beautiful scenery we saw today. There are pictures attached, but believe me when I tell you, the colors in these pictures don't do the real thing justice. The Napali Coast is accessible one of three ways......by boat, by helicopter or by 13 miles of a level 9 trail. Because of the rugged landscape, there are no rodes on this little corner of the world. Thus, you aren't able to drive a complete circle around the island.
We learned that there were quite a few films shot along this famous coast--Jurassic Park, 6 Days/7 Nights, White Hot and Dragonfly to name just a few. Kauai is actually a very popular island for film makers and tv producers. The water was a little rough today in a couple of spots, including where we were to snorkel, so I figured today was not a good day for me to try snorkeling for the second time! Although, those who were more experienced that did snorkel said they saw lots of fish and a few sea turtles. Guess I'm going to have to come back again and hope for calmer waters!
After our wonderful cruise, we said goodbye to Manu and the guys and headed off for
Waiamea Canyon. After a very looooonnnnngggggg and winding drive to the top, we were in for a treat! Waiamea Canyon is known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific......and for good reason. It does look a lot like the Grand Canyon, only slightly smaller and more green. But, very beautiful. From here we made a quick stop at the Kauai Coffee Co. for some gifts and then back to the Marriott where we were on our own for the evening.
After so many days of being busy, we took it easy tonight. Heather, Aime, Jill and I had dinner at Dukes here at the Marriott (very good food and an awesome Mai Tai too!). We also did a little shopping, but some of the shops were closed, so a few more souvenirs will be found in the a.m. after breakfast on the terrace!!!
Tomorrow is my last day here in my little slice of paradise :( I'm sad to leave, but anxious to get home and start sending people to Kauai for vacation!! Good night all and aloha!
