2 Day trip to Uluru (Ayers Rock)

All this travelling malarky starts with early mornings.... 5.10am was our pickup from the Hostel!!!!! There were 19 of us on this tour and our guide was Gaz or also known as wombat... Onto the Stuart Highway only really stopping for fuel and drink stops. And stopping as we see wild horses and camels. We arrive at Kings Canyon, unfortunatly the temperature was in the high 30's so we couldn't climb the top of the canyon to see all the views (not that I was complaining cos my knees wouldn't have made it!!!). So we took a walk that went through the centre of it. Along the way Gaz was telling us all about the different trees and things and there meanings in the aboriginal lives. We were then on our way for lunch at Kathleen Springs. After lunch back on the road, we turn off the Stuart Highway onto Lasseter Highway and head to our camp at Yulara, just making it in time to see the sunset over the Kata Tjuta (the Olgas). Playing music quizzes to keep us entertained. Trailer emptied and dinner prepared and cooked. A couple of beers but a very early night as had to be up at 4am, so we'd be ready to leave camp at 5am so we could get to Uluru for sunrise....

We got to Uluru and started the walk around the base, watching as the sun came up and the colourings in the rock changing each time. It took about 2 hours to walk around the whole of the base but it was just amazing to see. You can apparently walk up the rock, but it was closed due to the weather and also the locals do not like you to climb up. There was quite alot that you could not photograph as they are sacred sites to the local people. Once we had walked round we met up with our guide and he then told us about some of the dreamtimes and rituals that occured at the rock. Then it was time to leave and head to Kata Tjuta (The Olgas). Once again the high temperatues stopped us from doing the main walks around there, so it was a short walk to a lookout, but even this time my knees had given up from the walk around the rock, so I stayed behind and helped get lunch ready. During lunch, Gaz gave us a talk and demonstration on how Kata Tjuta and Uluru came about through the evolution of the earth. After we cleared up and packed up the trailer it was time to hit the road for the approx 6 hour journey back to Alice Springs. Arriving back at alice it was once again a quick check in and shower change and out for dinner.... Now totally warn out and looking forward to getting to Cairns and relaxing for a few days.
