Happiness Is The Road
After brekky we went to explore Ormiston Gorge. The weather wasn't as hot today and there was some cloud cover. Perfect conditions for a bit of walking. We went on a short walk first of all to look at the Gorge itself. It was very dramatic with high sides towering above the water hole. After this we set off on the longer Ormiston Pound Walk. The walk started by taking us away from the gorge through beautiful bush land. After a kilometre or so the main path started to climb until we took a steeper side path to a lookout. The view from the top of the lookout was breath taking. From here we had a 360 degrees view of the area and in front of us we could see the vast expanse of Ormiston Pound in all it's majestic glory. It is a massive natural compound surrounded by cliffs on all sides with just a couple of gaps to get into it. It was an incredible sight and much bigger and more impressive than the Wilpena Pound that I saw in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. From the lookout the walk took us down and through one of the gaps into the pound itself. Apart from a couple of people that we passed at the beginning of the walk we saw no one else and we had the pound to ourselves. It was a lovely serene place and all we could hear were the sounds of nature. The path would it's way through the pound and across a number of virtually dry creek beds. Apparently after rainfall you have to wade through the creeks. Eventually the path came to the biggest gap in the pound and we then followed the dry creek bed through Ormiston Gorge with it's grand rock sides towering above us. This part of the walk was loads of fun as we had to scramble over all the rocks, some of them huge, that lay on the creek bed. After a while and not long before we would have got back to the water hole we followed a steep path up the side of the gorge to another lookout where we could survey the dramatic grandeur of the gorge below us. Once we had walked back down to the car park we must have covered about 7 kilometres or so. We had really enjoyed this walk. We didn't want to stay at the Ormiston Gorge Campground again tonight as we wanted power so we got in the camper and drove about 10 kilometres to the Glen Helen Resort. It was basically a roadhouse with a caravan park and it was right next to the walk trail to Glen Helen Gorge. We got a good quiet spot on the edge of the caravan park and then we did the short walk to the gorge. Although not quite as dramatic as the other gorges it was worth the walk. We just relaxed for what was left of the day and watched the dingoes that came to the edge of the caravan park. It was a very cold night again.
