Katavi River Camp (Feb 11th - 12th by Paul)The next morning we headed off again, it had rained a lot during the night so weren't sure how this would affect the road, it didn't make much difference, it was still rough and slow. There were some trucks and buses on the road but not too much traffic. The road went through a national park (Katavi National Park) and we thought we could camp there for the night. As we passed though the park, we saw some elephants, giraffes, impala, and saw a lot of lion foot prints on the road but no lions. We got to the park head quarters and asked about camping, as suspected it was ridiculously expensive, we would have to pay $US15 to camp per person and $US20 per person in park fees, even though we wouldn't actually be seeing any more of the park than we had already seen. We decided this was a bit too steep so kept going. We had probably only got a couple of km's when we crossed a bridge over a small river, there were some hippo's so stopped to check it out.Just near the bridge there were a few buildings and it advertised camping so we checked it out. It looked like they were still working on the campsite but it looked good and at only $US5 per person was a much better option, so we settled in. During the night we could hear the hippos in the river but the wooden fence did the trick and kept them out of the camp area.
