Nkhata Bay - Mayoka Village (Feb 2nd - 5th by Susan)This place is billed in the guide books as a rival to Cape Maclear and I have to say it is definitely more scenic than Cape Maclear itself, set on two small bays with forest all around. We'd decided to go to Mayoka Village, more than anything because the guide book said they offered lifts from the ferry which would mean we wouldn't have to go pick Dave and Kaz up at 5am in the morning when it arrived.Sadly they no longer offered this service and they ended up making their own way across when they arrived in the early hours of Sunday morning.Mayoka Village is definitely very pretty, built on quite a steep slope with very nice chalets, to be honest though I was a bit disappointed that we couldn't camp. The road in had been very bad for the last couple of kms and Kal had to stay in the dirt car park at the top of the village with no option really to use the roof camp. On the brighter side they only had two rooms left, a beautiful double room with funky shower and bathroom high up on the hill side or a room with 3 single beds, they did have camping but it would mean lugging our stuff down the hillside and it was still quite wet so we opted for the double. We spent most of the rest of the day in the bar, which had a great atmosphere, this seemed to be the independent travellers place to be with a lot more people to talk to (overland trucks seem to keep themselves to themselves generally). This resulted in my worst hang over of the trip to date, we started at around 4pm and finished at around 11pm I'm not sure how many double Malawian gins and ginger ale I'd had by the end of the night but the bar bill the next morning proved it was a lot and fitting to be feeling so aweful. Still it was self inflicted so I couldn't really complain, we were definitely staying another night as the guys were knackered after there ferry trip so I was able to take it easy all day lazing around our chalet reading my book and napping, oh what a hard life!!That evening I decided that alcohol was not for me that day so stuck to the sprite's, by this point too Kaz had fallen ill so was back in there tent running a temperature and by all accounts throwing up a lot, Dave had had a similar thing in Pemba and was pretty sure it was just food poisoning not anything more serious. This meant there were three of us for dinner, that's the other thing about Mayoka it has an amazing menu with daily specials to get your teeth into.Tonight it was a Malawian Buffet which to my surprise was all veggie food, this being the case the boys opted for rump steak but on seeing the buffet and tasting their not so great steak they regretted it.For the buffet the bar was cleared and huge pots of food started arriving, the restaurant was busy with at least 20 people opting for the buffet I think and rightly so it was delicious. There were cassava wedges (much better than the raw stuff we'd tried earlier in the day but still pretty dry), a spinach and peanut sauce stew type thing, a proto veg and vegetable stir fry, rice, sweet potato stew, okra and tomato ratatouille type stuff, fried aubergine, some sort of bean dish the list goes on and on and by the end of the bar my plate was filled to overflowing!!One of the best veggie meals I'd had since the trip started!!Today, I can't believe it I'm actually writing about the current date it has been raining lots so again we've had a lazy one with Paul cutting together some of the video's we've taken the past few months, hopefully we'll get them on the blog today or tomorrow so if you haven't yet done it check out our video tab!!Going to sign off now and go head down into the village to see if we can find some internet, fingers crossed it wont be too slow!!
