Mzuzu (Feb 5th - 6th by Susan)We hadn't intended on staying in Mzuzu for the night, just a short stop to pick up some supplies and to sort out some odds and ends.As we left Nkhata bay we'd stopped at a row of curio stalls and decided that since we had to send our wooden Kal back to Oz we might as well pick up something else. They had some amazing things, awesome chairs and tables but Paul and I opted for a wooden bowl until we judged how well things would make it back to Oz.Kaz and Dave went all out and bought a beautiful wooden table, rhino book ends and a wooden bowl.It was amazing to watch the carvers at work; they start out with light coloured wood, something like pine, carve out what they are making and then get to work on it with Kiwi boot polish.Paul was informed that dark tan was the best; you finish up with something that looks like its mahogany or something rare without the guilt of knowing you are contributing to the loss of yet another old hard wood tree. The next challenge was posting the stuff.Once in Mzuzu we located the post office, but after getting a rough idea of how much it would cost we had to go in search of packing stuff. We found boxes quite quickly and bought a news paper to pack with.Paul and I were done quite quickly and decided to go get some lunch and then check out the internet. When we saw Dave and Kaz about an hour and a half later we were surprised to find that they had just escaped the post office, apparently the staff had had different ideas to Dave and Kaz about how there large package should be packed!!We are now all holding our breath to see if the parcels show up in Oz two - three months later!!Meanwhile there was more bad news for Kaz, she'd sent jewellery back home to Oz with a friend she'd met up in Cape Town, on checking her e-mail she discovered that her friend's house had been burgled and all of her jewellery was gone!!This and the fact that time was ticking on meant we decided to stay the night in Mzuzu. The guide book made out that there was a backpackers called Mzoozoozoo that was pretty happening, as it turned out it was a bit run down and not so crash hot but it would do for the night.
