Hello from Hoi An, Vietnam. It is currently raining, so I thought it may be a good time to update the blog.
Hue was great, we stayed at the best little guesthouse for $3 a night. The women that ran the place were so nice, booking all our tours, doing our laundry (we paid of course) and making us the best banana pancakes for breakfast. Last Sunday, JS, Sara and Sofia from Portugal, Rok from Slovenia and I took a boat trip on the PerfumeRiver in Hue. The trip was great, super relaxing just cruising down the scenic river. We stopped at 5 site's, including 2 very nice tombs of former Emperors and a Pagoda. The whole day was great.
Monday, JS and I took a tour of the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). We saw the old Marine base of Khe Sanh, where there was a big battle in 1968. It was a little depressing, but I think it was a good place to visit. We also went to the Vinh Moc tunnels. We were able to actually walk through the tunnels which was great. The tunnels had little rooms to hold a four person family, but they were maybe 3 feet high, 4 feet wide and 5 feet deep. It would have been terrible to actually stay there.
Arrived in the very touristy town of Hoi An yesterday. I think there are more tourists than locals. Hoi An is known for its tailors, so I am picking up a suit soon, hopefully it fits right. JS and I did some biking around town today until the rain started. Tomorrow we head to the town of Nha Trang and the beaches. Hope it's not too cold at home...
Anyway, Vietnam has been great so far. Everyone is so friendly, all the children yell "Hello!! Where you from?" and everyone speaks at least some English. The food is great and very cheap, we eat a good meal for about $2, and we eat like kings for $8 (5 course meal and 2 beers). Everyone should put Vietnam on their list of places to go...
