I'm back in Bangkok, after almost two weeks of traveling with my sister. Sorry I have not updated the blog until now, but we have been pretty busy. After arriving in Bangkok with no issues, we decided to go to the temples at Angkor Wat in Cambodia. It was my second time visiting there, but Jenna's first. We took the bus from Bangkok, and thankfully the road in Cambodia was actually paved. Last year when I was visiting, it was still a dirt road with tons of potholes. We did have a very typical Southeast Asia moment on our bus. About 3 miles outside Siem Reap, the bus stopped and someone came on saying we had arrived….clearly we were out of town. The man then said the bus can't go into town, but you can take a tuk tuk into town for about $3….but, if you stay at his guesthouse, it's free! Ha, well there was nothing we could do short of walking, so we had to take a tuk tuk to another guesthouse. Angkor Wat was really nice; we saw the sunrise and all the main temples and then headed back to Bangkok.
Back in Bangkok again, we decided to take a day tour outside the city. We first stopped at a floating market. It was pretty interesting to see all the houses and boats on the canal…a little bit of a floating tourist market, but still nice to see. We then went to the tiger temple outside Kanchanaburi. The tiger temple is a Buddhist temple that has many tigers they look after. You can take photos and actually pet the tigers, which is a little scary. Some of the tigers were 400 pounds or more. Again, a bit of a tourist trap, but fun to see anyway. The last stop on the day tour was to the Bridge on the River Kwai, which was a bridge built on slave/POW labor during WWII. I liked visiting it because I remember watching the movie with my dad.
The next day, Jenna and I headed to Koh Chang Island, the 2nd largest island in Thailand (near the Cambodian border). We ended up meeting a couple on the bus from Amsterdam and we saw them on the island each day. Koh Chang was a really nice place to visit. We stayed in a bungalow right on the beach on the west side of the island. Every night we saw an amazing sunset. The beach was beautiful too. I didn't do a whole lot on the island but relax, but Jenna did an elephant ride (I went on one last year so didn't go again). I had a great time on Koh Chang and met some really great people. I already miss the island.
We are back in Bangkok today, and Jenna flies home tonight. I take a night train to Chiang Mai, where I will start my first 2 weeks of training on Tuesday. It's been a good start so far. I will try to update the blog more often from now on. Please leave comments and say hi. Thanks!
