Driving through the South!! I had forgotten how cold it can get travelling on overnight buses and lastnight was a sharp reminder. The bus journey was smooth enough and luckily no police checks however the chilly air conditioning chilled me to the bone. At around 10am we stopped at a roadside resteraunt and everyone poured off the bus rushing to get food and use the bathroom. One thing I have noticed about Venezuelans is they love to eat and eat sweet and fatty food. I figured I have lots of Bolivars to spend before crossing into Colombia so I treated myself to a coffee, fresh pineapple juice, peanut and sesame bars. It was soon back to the bus, the freezing air conditioning and the long road ahead. I had brought some tinned sardines and an avocado which did me well for lunch as no one new when our next stop might be. Unfortunately the sardines or maybe it was the milk they had put in my coffee made me feel ill and I could feel my stomach squirming the rest of the way to San Cristobal. Another stop, more snacks and then a few more hours seen us arriving into the small city of San Cristobal at around 8:30pm. Luckily there were many hotels around and the second one we checked gave us a nice room for 4 for about $13; complete with aircon, hot water and good wifi. We were all hungry at this point and luckily 20 meters down the road was a roast chicken house offering 1/4 roast chicken for just over $1. The portions of chicken were huge and alongside the chicken was a coleslaw salad - one of my favorite things about Venezuela is there love for chicken. The resteraunt had this really nice coriander salsa that I went to town on and ended up finishing the whole bowl. Walking back to our hotel I was reminded of my upset stomach and I spent the rest of the night cradling my upset belly. With lots of research and contacting upcoming hosts; I spent to the early hours of the morning on the Internet.
