Today I was up at 4:30am ready for my day trip to San Miguel Island. We made our way to the bus station by 6:15am and met Julie's Aunty and two cousins who I would be accompanying today to San Miguel Island. We caught a jeepney to Tobaco which took about an hour and then waited another hour for a boat to come. Amazingly no one else was going to the island so we had a little boat to ourselves - to say it was a little rough was an under-statement at one point we even run out of fuel. The whole boat trip took about 1.5 hours and was very scenic - sailing along the coastline of San Miguel and traveling through the interior channel. We arrived to the island and there was a party/fiesta happening on the beach. We met up with more relatives and made our way to some hits along the beach. We drank coconut water ate a little and relaxed before heading out for a swim. The water was wonderful and it wasn't long before we were called in for lunch - a huge cook-up for the whole village of wild pig, fish, crab, vegetables, rice, coconuts the whole works. You definitely tend to overheat at these things and today was no exception I ate too much and made myself feel sick, luckily we were first in before the other 100 people who followed. I met 2 girls from Manila who were on the campaign trail with the rest of their family and who in the end - ended up being related to Julie aswell. Another thing here is everyone tends to be related. They told me about more wonderful places in the region that I had missed seeing and some food that I had to try before I left, one of them was an attorney and the other a Doctor and humble in their occupations they were. Next I met the former X Governor a Hippy that the people of Bicol loved he was hilarious and made a few Australian jokes at me. The rest of the arvo we swam and relaxed with Justin and his cousin Daniel. The boat came and we made our long 2 hour boat ride back followed by an hour and a half in the jeepney. The way back was a little harder with boat full and a lot of fuel fumes but the view of Mt Mayon was priceless. Julie picked us up at the bus station and we went and picked up their favorite fried chicken - a treat for my lastnight here. We went back and another feast awaited - mango salad, vegetable dishes, fish, fried chicken and all for me :) It was time to get out my present for Julie's Dad: I had a photo taken up on Mt Mayon of us blown up and put in a nice silver frame to say Thankyou! He was shocked and his reaction was priceless he was so proud of it that it actually made me a little emotional - he had done so much for me and this small act really touched him and made me feel even better. The Photo got priority on the Photo wall and he has changed it's position 3 times already. After Dinner Julie's Aunty and 2 cousins came back around and took me up to another tourist attraction here- a nighttime viewing platform and theme park. Unfortunately it was just closing as we arrived so we decided to go for a walk along the broad walk. I had made a promise to Julie to try Balut (18 day old duck still in egg) and the first hawkers we see are selling it - great haha two were brought one for me one for Justin. The guy selling was really good and showed us the technique to eating them: the shell is cracked and then you drink the juice - gross it is really discussing taste, next you peel the shell - looking at the body, feathers and beak of duck - a quick dash of salt and then down it goes. I went for it and at first the thought of what I was doing went straight to my mind and I went to throw up but managed to hold it down. In the end it was actually quite nice and chewy - Justin through it up and Julie had to finish his last half. The worst part is the after taste and the next 2 hours I spent burping up the taste and I also got very light headed. I am glad I did it but by god I won't do it again as it was far from enjoyable!
