Today begins the epic journey from Latacunga Ecuador to Lima Peru - not really knowing how its going to pan out so will try my best to just go with the flow. I was lucky enough to have my host family drop me off at the bus terminal - I said my goodbyes and promised when I visit again I will be able to speak Spanish. The first bus I took headed to Ambato: one hour away and from here I was lucky enough to jump straight on a bus to Guayaquil. The bus trip was anything but comfortable and about halfway through I discovered that my bag (stashed under my seat to avoid anyone stealing from it) was drenched in vinegar and oil - someone had spilled a massive amount of it and you guessed all through my stuff, my phone was dripping wet but amazingly still worked - I have to count myself lucky on that front. At the lunch stop I took my bag and put it out in the sun in an attempt to get it dry. Another problem with all the oil and vinegar on the floor of the bus it was like we were all ice skating- people were slipping over left and centre and this kid slipped really bad and cracked his head. After 7 hours (what should have been 5) we arrived at Guayaquil Bus Terminal - a huge station with over 100 different bus companies servicing it. I was hoping to jump straight on a bus to either Lima or Piura - unfortunately all these buses leave in the evening and the ones direct to Lima were very expensive. I opted to take the medium priced comfortable bus leaving at 9pm and expected to arrive at 7am. Having 5.5 hours to kill in Guayaquil I thought I might wonder around city but soon discovered the terminal is miles away from city so twiddling my thumbs for the next few hours it is then. The bus rocked up 30 minutes late but luckily it was a nice double decker bus that I had paid for - we were promised wifi but no such luck. When we first got on the attendant came around and gave us all a snack pack which was a nice surprise. I was actually quite tired from all of the days traveling and managed to get some intermittent sleep.
