First of all I just wanted to say thanks so much for all of my messages - keep them coming as it is great to hear what you are all up to!!
We are now in Saigon! (AKA HO Chi Minh City). Arrived yesterday lunctime and we were all exhausted after our last night in Hoi An. Had an interesting night filled with dancing on the pool table (not while the game was being played!) sampling several buckets of 'King Kong's super strong bucket!' and then the night ended with one of the girls being sick then crawling along the floor of the hotel room until I put her into my bed and then shared a single bed with my roommate.
Saigon is a busy city but not as hectic as Hanoi. It is an experience trying to cross the road as it is like crossing a motorway dodging bikes, cars and buses! Thankfully I am still in one piece. Spent yesterday afternoon on another cyclo and had a tour of the city seeing the Notre Dame, Opera house, palace etc. We went to the War Remnants museum which was so interesting but the images were so horrific I had to stop looking. There were photos of beheadings, severely deformed children as a result of the poisons dropped and they were the ones I can write about! Still got lots to learn about the war but finding it fascinating. Ate at the local market for dinner and then was in bed at 10!
Had an early start this morning and went to the Cu Chi tunnels. These were tunnels built by the Vietnamese people for many years to hide from the American soldiers and which go on for about 200kms! Went inside the tunnels which were so narrow and dark and we had to crawl on our knees in some parts. Great fun and got covered in mud! Fired an AK-47, don't think I hit the target but it was very cool! It was so loud my ears were ringing for ages afterwards. Spent the afternoon looking round the indoor market which wasn't that great and then around the backpackers quarter, which is an area with bars/cafes. It is Steph's birthday today and we are off out tonight to a sports bar as she is football mad. Hopefully it will be a bit tamer than the other night as we are off to Cambodia tomorrow and have a very long bus ride!!!
Will write again in Cambodia!
